No Sound Playing a Commercial DVD

Have spent the past hour just reviewing questions on the forum for the purpose of learning. Several forum questions about audio not playing on a dvd reminded me of a problem I have not been able to resolve.

The problem concerns a movie dvd that I purchased. When played on my Yamaha S520 dvd player, there is no audio. However, when played on my Toshiba, the audio plays. The information on the dvd indicates that it will play in all regions. What's confounding is that all other dvds that I have played on the Yamaha have never exhibited this problem. This includes many that have been rented, and the dvds that I have made using Creator 2009. I've called Yamaha technical service. Their response is that I should send it in for service. But for what? The player works fine with every dvd that has been played on it, except for this one dvd. And yet, this same dvd plays okay on the Toshiba. It has also successfully played on a Samsung dvd player. Moreover, the Yamaha has a language setting function that allows for two different language settings, should the dvd have this feature. On this particular dvd, the language setting is inoperable, indicating that the dvd plays in all regions as indicated on the dvd jewel case.

Any ideas as to how to resolve the problem?

Your problem is with a purchased DVD Movie Disc and a Yamaha S520 DVD Player.

Return the disc and if it still doesn't play in the Yamaha DVD Player use a different player to view it..

I did check with Yamaha about firmware updates. There were no updates available for this player. If indeed there is a problem with the dvd, why does it play okay on other dvd players? That includes the dvd players on both of my computers. Additionally, the Yamaha has never failed to play the sound on many other dvds. This would have to be the perfect storm. That is, an incompatability issue that exists just between these two particular items....this particular dvd and the Yamaha player. I do use the Toshiba dvd player, but that's not the one connected to the surround sound system, and it does not have an optical sound connection, which the Yamaha has. The Yamaha produces a better picture and sound.

What i the name of the DVD the Yamaha won't play the sound?

Could the DVD have DTS Audio and the Yamaha won't play it?

I didn't say that the Yamaha doesn't play sound at all, it just doesn't play the sound on this one dvd. The sound on the dvd in question is mpeg, which the specs of the Yamaha indicates it plays. The Yamaha also plays DTS/Dolby digital and PCM. Well no matter. I've had this dvd for a couple of years and I just don't play it very much. It's not a big deal. I just thought that maybe someone on the forum might have contended with a similar problem and was able to resolve it.

Thanks for all the input.
