Toast Needs Over 4000 Discs for 4 GB

foxglove

Question

I'm trying to burn a data dvd using toast. The data consists of avi files, . I've tried "Mac only" and "Mac & PC" with the same result. It says it needs over 4000 discs for just over 4GB.

I trying deleting the plist file and then relaunched Toast. I get the same error.

Strangely enough, if I switch to "CD" instead of DVD, it says I only need six discs.

If I select DVD-ROM, it simply says "space remaining: 0 bytes" no matter the amount of data I am trying to burn.

How can I solve this?

When I've seen similar posts the solution always was to trash the Toast plist and prefs files in your Preferences folder. Did you trash both?

Yes, It was one of the first things I tried. I did a search on the forums here and saw that as a suggestion. I close toast, delete the plist, and relaunch toast to the same error.

Also, I just tried burning a video_ts folder under "Video". Although here Toast properly says it will burn a little over 5 GB to 1 dvd with 25% compression, when I click record Toast crashes and closes.

If I try to burn a data dvd in spite of the fact that it says it will take 4000 cds, it reboots my entire bleeping machine. I've tried it several times.

This is driving me insane. I've uninstalled and reinstalled three different versions of toast with the same problem *every* time.

I know you think you told me this already, but did you also trash the "Roxio Toast Prefs" file as well as the com.roxio.Toast.plist file? So far you only specifically mentioned the plist file. I wonder if that prefs file is being written at all in your preferences folder.

What you're experiencing is obviously not right and we need to figure out why. As for troubleshooting the crash when trying to compress a VIDEO_TS folder to fit a single-layer disc, it may be another symptom of the same problem.

The first time around I couldn't find a preferences file for Toast when I deleted the plist.

I just went back to look again, and surprise! The plist file didn't recreate after I deleted it (I did reopen Toast). So now not only is there no preferences file for Toast, there is no plist file.

I'm not sure what to do. I've uninstalled and reinstalled three versions of Toast today, trying to fix this. Toast 9, and two versions of 10. Right now I'm on Toast 10.0.6.

This is definitely a strange problem.

I suggest running the first aid in Disk Utility or Disk Warrior if you have that. It may be enough to repair permissions which you can do without booting from another system. If you boot from your system install disc you can run the full Disk Utility repair from it.
