converting analog tape to cd

I am trying to convert an analog tape to cd. I did a test one of a music tape and when I played it back, the sound was very distorted and possible an incompatible signal. Not sure. I have alot of tapes to convert and really need this to work well. Thank you

How have you got this hooked up. Sounds like your over driving your input,

Further to what Ogdens said, if you're connecting into your sound card, make sure you're going into the Line-In jack, not the Microphone jack.
