Popcorn 4 - 4.0.2 Update

ERS529

Question

Updated to Mac OS 10.6 and thought it might solve some of the problems I previously have had w/ Popcorn 4... never did get the save streaming web video to my computer to work.

So Downloaded 4.0.2 - after dragging the application to the application folder got the following:

A newer item named “Popcorn 4” already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the older one you’re moving?

I selected REPLACE to continue, then got:

The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items

Only had the option to select OK and that was that...

About Popcorn shows only Version 4.0...

Working on a MacBook Pro as the Admin. Read another thread & downloaded on Firefox as well... same results!?!

Anyone have any ideas? Thank you!

Either rename or trash the original Popcorn 4 folder before dragging in the new one. That way the new one doesn't have to automatically replace the older one. The streaming Web video should work without problems. Test by going to YouTube because those definitely work.

Digital Guru,

You da man! I changed the Popcorn 4 folder in Applications to "Popcorn 4 old" and then all went fine... thanks!

But I still have the same issues w/ recording Web videos in OS 10.6 as I had in 10.5!! Looks like it works, double click the video in the Web Video window and I get the audio but the video is all black... no images. And even more frustrating, when I try and record the same video again from the web, it doesn't do anything- no file is added to the Web Video window. I noted another thread on this same problem and it was never resolved. I have found if I restart the Mac, I can re-record that video again from the Web, but I get the same results... audio w/o any video. But that is a real pain to have to shut down my computer!

That is the only reason I need Popcorn 4- to recording Web videos! I watch a lot of cycling races from Europe and wanted to be able to record them like on a DVR so I don't have to be in front of the computer during the time of the actual race, or so I can archive the races...

Can you wave your magic wand again for me Digital Guru? Or suggest another program that will record Web videos, especially streaming videos from the web. Thanks!

This is going to be harder to solve because I haven't encountered that problem. When you drag one of those captures to the main Popcorn window (such as with Video Files selected in the Convert tab) there should be a description of its specs below the title. Does it give any specs for the video or does it just report the audio specs? If there are video specs, what are they? Also, let me know a location where you've captured one of these videos so I can see if I experience the same thing.

Thanks again for your help!

Here are the specs on the "blank video" file:

duration: 229.162267

width: 512.000000

height: 384.000000

framerate: 29.970030

canSeekToEnd: YES

vidoecodecid: 4.000000

videodatarate: 750.000000

audiocodecid: 2.000000

audiosampleerate:44100.0000000

audiosamplesize: 16.000000

So then when I try and drag to the main Popcorn 4 window I get the message:

"filename.flv" was not added because a required codec is missing (VP6F).

BTW, filename is some long #. So is that my problem, missing some codec from the web video file?? And what is that?!?!

Try for instance viewing & copying Stage 9 Highlights narrated by Phil Liggett (03:49 english) — versus from http://www.steephill.tv/tour-de-suisse/

That is a file I tried to get today...

And why can't I copy the same file twice w/o having to restart my Mac? Any idea what is up with that?

Pls let me know what you get. I appreciate your time.

I have encouraging news. It worked on my MacBook Pro with that stream. The discouraging part is I have no idea why it isn't working on your Mac. A couple things to try are 1) trash the Popcorn Preferences and the com.roxio.Popcorn.plist files in your User>Library>Preferences folder and relaunch Popcorn; and 2) download and install the Perian codec from www.perian.org.

You don't need to restart the Mac but you do need to log out and log back in. My guess is that Popcorn creates some info in a cache file that it keeps even after the video is deleted.

I did all three things that you suggested and now I get the audio AND the video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not sure what one did the trick, but it works now!

Still not able to do the same video clip twice... but I don't even care now.

Digital Guru, Roxio should be paying you a salary for customer support! Tech support at Roxio is not only slow to respond, but did not solve this issue... but Digital Guru did!

Thank you again for you time & efforts!

I just updated to 4.0.2 and since cannot convert any files. Any time I attempt to try popcorn crashes on me and I get a giant event log that gets sent to apple. I am not so much of a techie so I have no idea what is going on. I would like at this point to convet bact to my previous version but cannot figure out how to do that. Anyone able to help?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

First thing to try is to trash the popcorn plist file in your User>Library>Preferences folder and relaunch Popcorn. If you have Lion or Mountain Lion you access your user library by holding down the option key when selecting the Go menu in the Finder.

What OS are you running? What is the source file type you're trying to convert? At what point does the crash occur?
