This is a very bizarre problem, eventually solved thankfully. The installation DVD wouldn't run on my Dell laptop, in fact from the odd noises the dvd drive was making I concluded the disc wasn't even spinning. The disc would run ok on a desktop PC with a tray-loading dvd drive but not in the slot-loading drive of the laptop.
The cause of the problem turned out to be the rather sticky finish to the printed top side of the disc preventing it from loading properly in the drive slot. The solution was to scrub the printed side with detergent until it became less sticky, then it loaded properly and fired up as you would expect. I don't know if Dells are particularly sensitive but other computers with slot-loaders (like Mini-Macs)could have the same problem. Presumably laptops with a manual pull-out tray would be ok.
