I have exactly the same problem, having had to acquire an additional lead from scart to RCA to even get anyway close to connecting things up. Admittedly the VHS is quite old, but all I get when I play video is a few wavy coloured bars on screen, no proper picture, no sound at all. Not very happy at all here about product, so far a waste of money, plus spent a few quid on obtaining additional leads to connect up, and still NOTHING!

Verify that you Scart has the ability to output a signal, A lot of Scart cables are only IN, Here's one that has a switch that makes it IN or OUT http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hama-Phono-SCART-Switchable-cable/dp/B00006JCXU/ref=dp_cp_ob_ce_image_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1241109242&sr=8-1
