Question

Been a major user of 7.5, but upgraded to 2010--just came back froma trip and have video and pics to post.Have video at 59fps 720 HD id like to put into a video.reading the posts in this forum, it looks like the process is a bit different from 7.5.Some basic questions to start with

my pics are all 4:3, video is in HD 16:9--can i mix them intoan HD video

I have a BluRay/HD burner,as well as a a std DVD burner.I have a bluray dvd which has 25GB capacity, but when i go to burn,it says theres only 4.7Gb. How much video can i put on a disc, can i use the std DVD or the HD video, will it record at 59fps--id like an HD video, but can i make both from the same ISO file. What are the major differences between making avidoe in 7.5 and 2010----thanks so much--bob

thanks to all--i did comlete a draft of my projectto see how it would compile--it was a 2GB project and with the new PC it compiled it in 25 minutes in HD,just using a std DVD.Just played it on my Sony bluray and it looks terrific.I was concerned that mixing the 4:3 images with the 720HD 16:9 would create black space on the images, but it didnt.I do have 2 more questions, one serious---i did the project in Videowave, since Im familair with that, then went to try and burn, and it took me to MyDVD.Not sure i saved the project in Videowave, but did in MyDVD a a dmsm file. Also created an iso image. After the DVD was done, i wanted to go back in since i knew my new process worked, opened Videowave, clicked on open production and browsed My Video and the files not there.Do a search and the file shows up in My Video, click on it, and it says i have videowave and my dvd open and it will affect quality if i open it.I open it anyway since im experimenting, and now im in MyDVD,and dont know how to edit, add music,change/add pics etc, things im used to doing in Videowave.Well, since i know the file is there, close MyDVD, open Videowave, try to open prodcution, browse my videos, and its not there. Can you guys tell me what Im doing wrong and how do i open a production that iev already done--im suspecting its because id didnt save it in Vidowave before i went to MYdVD.If thats the case,is there any way i can still edit the project either in Videowave or MyDvd

2nd, simple question, in 7.5 i liked the ability to set up the opening slide to a "canned" theme, like 20th century fox,and the music that went with it.Can i do that in 2010-i was able to add my own music, but not anythng canned that was theme based

If your saved project file has the dmsm extension then you saved it in Videowave. myDVD project files have the dmsd extension.

Unless you want to start the project over from scratch in Videowave you will have to edit in myDVD. It contains/uses the same editor as Videowave except you cannot save as a VW project but only as a myDVD project. Select the movie you want to edit and then click on "Edit Movie" in the task panels.

If you create a project in Videowave and then send that project to myDVD, you are asked whether you want to save your VW project. You must have answered no, otherwise you must have the VW dmsm somewhere on your hard drive

Yes, you can mix 16:9 and 4:3. Just create a project that is 16:9. The 4:3 will have black bars added to the sides to make it 16:9. However, up-converting standard definition to hidef won't make it look any better.

When you run MyDVD, you should choose Bluray project. Does it not recognize the 25GB disc that way?

I'm not sure about the 59.97fps.

Right after Roxio DVD builder 7.5 was the merger with Sonic which had the MyDVD product. There was a huge change in V8. Some things will still be familiar though.

Bob, Have you thought about AVCHD video discs? You can get about 40 minutes of HD video on a standard DVD. You burn it with a standard burner. You must have a DVD player that will play AVCHD discs. Quality is excellent. Of course they are less expensive to create than a Blu-ray disc. If my projects are in the 40 minute range, that is what I do even though I have a blu-ray burner also.

By the way, you can mix projects with standard definition video with high definition video on the same disc (menus). That way you can have new stuff and old stuff on the same disc. I made one for my brother with HD video from last year with SD video I made in 2001. It came out well. I did not try to mix SD and HD in one Video Wave project.

BTW also, the frames per second is not a measure of what constitutes high definition. It is the number of lines from the top of the TV to the bottom. High definition is 720, or 1080 i (interlaced) or p (progressive). You can have a 1080 (lines) p (progressive) at 24 frames per second. That is now the big thing since regular movies are filmed at the 24 frames per second. 24 fps gives a very slight "jittery" image that people seem to like. The higher frame rates are smoother and good for high speed events like racing, running, etc.

I am not sure what you mean exactly by your question re: "canned theme". I no longer have 7/7.5 installed so I can't go back and check to see what you are referring to.

thanks so much==no i didnt know there was AVCHD discs--ill get some today off ebay--on the mixing question of SD and HD--im confused--your note says i can do it, but then says not in Vidoewave. So how would i mix SD and HD vidoe in the same project??Im going to try and do a test project today to see what works for me using the HD stuff---so can I use a std dvd and render it in STD format,or cant i.When i complete the project and go to rendering thru MyDVD can i try to burn STD, then AVCHD, then Bluray---finally, when burning, is there also a disticntion between HD and bluray,if so do they use different discs--thanks so much--luv this forum--bob

Let's see if I can clarify. An AVCHD video disc is just a standard DVD where high definition video and or standard definition video has been burned onto it. A standard DVD and a standard burner. No special equipment and no special disc. The issue is the 40 minute or so time limit. You must also have a blu-ray player that will play AVCHD discs; not all Blu-ray player do have that capability.

What I meant was that you can create a AVCHD DVD that has a menu with standard definition movies and high definition movies.

Read this.

I have not tried to mix standard and high definition video in one Video Wave project and export it to a high definition file. I don't know how that would turn out.

I believe that if you start with a high definition video project, you can now change form a MyDVD project file without changing it. Why would you want to? Try it and let us know.

Yes, there is a difference between blu-rayand HD. Blu-ray is a special format that uses special hardware and discs which may or may not have high definition video. HD is simply high definition that can be burned to a blu-ray disc or to an AVCHD video disc.

Try not to mix terms. Blu-ray is a special type of disc and burner/reader. High definition refers to the number of lines (clarity) of video, fps or frames per second is just that- the number of frames that are changed per second of a standard or high definition video file. See the earlier link.

Remind me what computer you have. High defintion rendering takes a lot of time. With my old computer, a 30 minute high defination ISO file took more than overnight to render. Now , with the new computer, it still takes a lot of time but i can get it done in a couple of hours.

thanks again--i found some AVCHD blank discs at Best Buy today, theyre mini discs, only 1.8gb capcity, but im going to try that out tongiht.Guess ill just render it on my std burner first--i think it shows up just as DVD right when i go to burn? When i bought the discs they told me the AVCHD is a different disc than the std blank dvd--i have some std discs as well made by Sony--i might fool with that as well.

As to the PC, im not a techhie guy, but have a buddy who just built a new PC for me,with the knowledge that Id use it for rendering HD video. Its a quad core, 4gb RAM, 4gb processor, two hard drives spinning at 10,000 roms, and an 800 bus(whatvere that is).The last compuetr he built for me would render a 4gb Roxio 7.5 dvd in an hour--so im hoping this will be quicker--Ill let you know. This is kind of like my first child, hope it works the first time. The AVCHD discs are +R, and i usually use -R, so hope that doesnt matter.

So, what im going to do is create the project in Videowave, export it to MyDVD for burning, choose 16:9 format, then, and heres where im not sure, burn it using my std DVD burner or do i use my new bluray/hd burner--thanks again--bob

Bob, there is no such thing as a AVCHD DVD disc. This has been mentioned several times in this thread. You can use any standard 4.7GB DVD to create a DVD in the AVCHD format. If they told you different at Best Buy then they have no idea what they are talking about.

You cannot create menus in Videowave:rolleyes:

I have EMC 10 (and also EMC 7.5) installed. Could you give a step-by-step outline of what you are doing (using the full program/feature names) to pick your theme, etc. to create the menu.
