Can Burn Cd-R But Not Dvd-R

Kraftykelly

Question

Last august 2009 in the middle of burning a lightscribe image label it stopped working. A year later after Microsoft Assistance was able to update Vista to SP2. Thought I should try burning again. Nothing. I have the latest hardware for my Lite-on DVDRW LH-201A1H ATA. I have the latest Direct X and latest video card drivers. I can now burn lightscribe label and I can burn music to CD-R Verbadim lightscribe discs. Cannot burn to DVDs (Lightscribe DV-R Verbatim or Memorex DVD-R or Sony DVD-RW. Ran the Microsoft Fix It Diagnostic and it said it fixed the issue of non writable media but it did not work. After completing the 100% and image 100% it says Failed to start the image writing operation error while burning image 80004003 error while aborting. This is the message using Roxio EMC 10 suite. I get similar message using Nero 7 and similar message using a free burning image software. I am at a loss. Figure it can't be the burner if I can burn lightscribe label and burn to CD. Something missing on the DVD end - filters or something. Any ideas ???? Also the media I am using I have used in the past - stack of 100 DVDs so that should not be the problem either. I have burned the movie to iso and tried burning through Creator Classic - no luck, same message.

It's almost certain to be a faulty drive. The CD laser is separate from the DVD one (there are two)

The fact that Imgburn and Nero give the same problem would confirm that the actual drive itself is faulty

Thank you for your input. I have learned something - never knew there were two lasers, I guess on the lightscribe there are 3 lasers, one for dvd, one for cd and one for the image burning for the label.

I will go and get a new drive -- and forget about getting a lightscribe, this is my second lightscribe drive in 2 years - obviously not made well.

Mike,

If you have the same problem, then it's very likely you have the same cause - a failed drive.

Try burning a DVD with some other software - if you can make an ISO with EMC 10, try burning it with the small, free ImgBurn program from HERE..

If you can't burn your ISO to disc with ImgBurn, then the DVD part of your burner has probably failed.
