Question

I just installed the Roxio Creator Special Edition 2010 which included the bonus "convert VHS to DVD" analog video device. I also installed the Roxio video capture USB driver while my analog video device was in the USB port. I then connected the analog video device to my VCR by plugging in the yellow and red audio-out and the yellow video-out. I noticed there is still one female s-video in the analog video device into which I did not plug anything. It's just "out there". Should there be something in this? The analog video device (connected to the vcr) was then plugged into my PC USB port. My PC does not recognize or does not "find" the analog video device which is plugged into USB port. Can someone please help me?

Under the OPEN menu I see browse files, browse movie folder. Then separated and below those two choices are listed my CD drive then my DVD drive. But these two are not highlighted and cannot be selected. If I try to use CinePlayer with any other DVDs, my DVD drive does show up properly and I can click on it, and the movie plays. Any idea why this is? Should I be using some other app?

What do you see under the OPEN menu?

My OS is Windows XP Professional. I found a folder "Video Capture USB" in C:/Program Files/Roxio. This folder contains another folder "empia" which, in turn, contains 2 Vista folders and 2 XP folders, all with a bunch of files. My problem is that when I try to copy a video from my VCR, my PC cannot find my VCR which has been plugged into the USB via the Roxio analog video device. I can't figure out what's up. In looking at my list of programs loaded into my computer, I see Roxio Creator 2010 Special Edition; Roxio Photo Show; and Roxio Video Capture USB Driver. Am I missing something?

The drivers were redundant, they are in the software and install regardless of whether the device is ever plugged in. What OS are you running?

Using the device was outlined in This post.

Look through that and try it out. Post back if you have problems.

Not sure what you mean by this. Have you checked the Device Manager to see if the Roxio USB device driver is correct?

Plug in the USB device. No need to connect the VCR

You should hear Windows recognize the device with a sound

Right Click on Mm Computer and select MANAGE

In the left pane, click on Device Manager

On the right hand side, click on the tiny triangle beside 'Sound, video and game controllers'

There should be two entries for the Roxio device: one for video and one for audio.

I plugged my analog video device into the USB port. My computer made a sound like it always does when I insert my thumb drive or other device into USB. In the Device Manager under sound, video, and game controllers I do see the Roxio video and audio entries. However, when using copy/convert in Roxio Creator, the USB doesn't show up on my list of available "sources" from which to imput or copy my video. Also when opening "my computer", it does not show the USB as having anything in it. I can't figure out what could be wrong or what I'm missing.

If you are trying to capture video from an analog source such as a VHS player, you must use the "Capture" Video" application. Plug in your device and the USB device, start the VHS and immediately put it in pause. Open that application, select that device for input for both video and audio. Press capture and then take the VHS off pause. You will probably end up editing that video so you would use "Edit Video-Advanced" for that.

That is the proper way it should work. If the Drive letter is grayed out, then Cineplayer is not recognizing the disc as a Video Disc that can be played. So let's back up a few steps.

Which application did you use to burn the disc and what where the steps you used to burn it? Will it play with Windows Media Player?

Ah... as Steve poinsts out, you are using the wrong part of Creator. Copy and Convert is for existing files only. You need to capture your video from the USB device first.

My DVD does play with Windows Media and I also play it with HP PowerDVD which I use to capture photos because I find I can focus the photos better with PDVD than with ROXIO. Anyway, I tried using the copy/convert (to DVD) to make my DVD, but I couldn't figure out what to do after I selected my video to convert and clicked on the green arrow to begin the conversion. (Much later, I saw the "project" in MY VIDEOS). I ended up burning my DVD by inserting a blank DVD and seeing the Roxio icon on my desktop which was the "burn DVD" icon. I dragged my files from "my videos" to this Roxio burn disk icon and VOILA, it worked !

I find that Roxio assumes a lot about the user. I am brand new to this. I need "step by step" instructions which newer programs just don't have anymore. I appreciate all your help. Is there anywhere I can find detailed instructions for each Roxio application?

Thanks again,

Carmen

I'm a bit confused here - the drivers for the capture device are included in the installation software for the suite and not loaded separately.

Did you install Video Copy and Convert on top of Creator 2010?

As is obvious, I'm a novice to this video-making stuff. I first installed the entire software by simply running the CD and following the instructions. But when my PC failed to find the capture device, I researched my problem on this website and determined that I had failed to install the drivers because my capture device was not plugged in at the time of the original installation. This website then guided me into downloading and installing the drivers (this time I made sure the capture device was plugged in). So this is what I did. The manual enclosed with the software is not helpful at all.

YES !! It finally worked. I was absolutely using the wrong application. I'm learning to use the Roxio Creator very slowly. I did manage to capture my vhs movie onto my hard drive. I was also able to burn a DVD from it. However, I'm having trouble playing this homemade DVD with Roxio Cineplayer. My DVD drive does not show up in the pulldown menu as a media source option. I'm plugging along and learning as I go. Thanks much for your help and thanks to ggrussell.

Ah... that's why. I don't think that method will burn a 'video disc'. Sounds like you burned a data disc with the video files. You need to use Video Copy and Convert or MyDVD to create and burn a proper 'video disc'. The final disc will then play in Cineplayer and any DVD player connected to a TV.
