Skips In Dvd Playback

HwdCin

Question

When I burn DVDs they sometimes result in a DVD that contains skips of a frame or two at regular intervals varying from a few seconds to a minute or two. In each case, the files were copied from another DVD that had no such problem, and the original files contain no such skips when played back on my computer.

What settings are you using in Toast? How are the videos being copied from the other DVD?

I have tried several different settings, setting to multiplex only, encode only, and a variety of other variations, The result is always the same with the files that have this problem (not all do), The videos are being copied from the original discs to folders on my desk top and (apparently) arrive in good shape, since I can play them on my computer (using VCL) without and problems. When I burn them however, these short skips appear, as I described. I even thought it might be my disc drive so I tried saving them as disc images and not actually burning them. When I did this the same skips appeared when I played the image on my computer, though in slightly different locations, so obviously the program is doing something to the files while processing them.

Usually when the source is a VIDEO_TS folder from a DVD the copy is burned using the VIDEO_TS folders setting in the Video window. You mention multiplexing so I presume you are using the DVD-video setting instead. I also presume you added the video to the Toast window by dragging the VIDEO_TS folder there. Is that correct? If you are using the VIDEO_TS folders setting you may have discovered the bug in Toast 10.0.7 in which you cannot burn a DVD if you deselect any of the source content. This problem doesn't exist in earlier versions of Toast 10 so if that is an issue for you simply install an earlier version (you don't have to remove the 10.0.7 version).

If you are using the DVD-video setting then Toast could be having trouble handling timecode breaks in the source video. Something you can try is to add the video to the Toast Video window via the Toast Media Browser. Place the VIDEO_TS folder on the desktop or in the Movies folder. Choose DVD with the top button of the Media Browser. Double click what appears in the browser window to view the individual video titles that are contained in the VIDEO_TS folder. Drag the title(s) you want to the main window and Toast will extract the video file from the VIDEO_TS folder. See if that burns without the skips.

If the skips are still present then my recommendation is to use MPEG Streamclip to "Fix Timecode breaks" in the source video. After completing the repair choose Convert to MPEG in Streamclip's File menu and use that saved file in Toast for your DVD. MPEG Streamclip is freeware but it requires Apple's $20 Quicktime MPEG 2 Playback Component.

Thanks, I'll try all your suggestions and let you know what happens.
