Best Converting Settings

Philippe Gnannt

Question

Hello Roxio-community,

I recently bought myself Popcorn 4 so that I can convert my .mts files and edit them in Final Cut Express.

So today, I started figuring out which output setting would be the best for my files. I tried out such as the .h264 codec, the quicktime movie and so on (of course I always made everything to 100% so that I can achieve the best result).

But to be honest, I wasn't quite happy with my results as I know in which brilliant quality my camcorder is able to shoot!

So now I would like to know:

Which converting setting is the best to achieve the BEST quality?

I would highly appreciate a response,

greetings from bavaria, germany,

Philippe

First of all, thanks a lot for your response.

Here are my specs:

1920x1080 FULL HD

25 fps

file name: .mts

Final format I want to have: .mov (h.264 codec) or mp4 - these are the best files for video-portfolios etc.

I have already done one video with using popcorn 4 as a converter (output file with popcorn 4 was the quicktime movie with the h.264 codec, everything set to the maximum).

Here's the output of my first try: http://vimeo.com/13651799 / if you want you can compare this video's quality with the other videos I have done using another program which accepts .mts files.

Thanks a lot,

Philippe

Nice videos. I believe that Popcorn is simply using the QuickTime codecs for its conversions so the quality should be no different than if you used FCE to convert to a QuickTime movie with the H.264 codec. The settings you are using are the same I'm working with for my brother's HDV video. One adjustment we're testing is to add a checkmark to the box next to Deinterlace Source Video in the "Size..." custom setting window. My brother's videos are showing blurring around edges of fast motion items which I believe is caused by mishandling of an interlaced source.

Although I'm not supposed to mention applications not sold by Roxio, they have very close ties with El Gato so I'm going to suggest trying the trial version of El Gato's software edition of turbo.64 HD to see how the result compares with Popcorn for H.264 HD conversion.

I'm doing some research on this for my brother so I can do some checking for you, too. What are the specs of your source video files? What format are you going to want to create when done with your editing in FCE?
