Burning Dvd From Tivo

hlpw?

Question

Just bought Creator 2010. I'm trying to burn DVDs with show I have recorded on TIVO. I am using the copy & convert program and when I go to burn them I also get the bar stuck at 8%. When I try to cancel it the whole program freezes. I read the reply to 19gonzo61 question and tried using the MyDVD program but I can't figure out how to edit out the commercials. Can anyone help? Also, is there a way to put a title to each show so I can choose (from a title page) which one I want to watch instead of watching the whole DVD after it is burned? Does this make any sense? I am a bit "computer-challenged."

You should not be using "Video Copy and Convert" for doing any edits. The correct program to use is Videowave (Edit video -advanced" and then use my DVD (Create DVDs) to burn you DVD. It is not difficult at all.

Thanks for posting this useful information! Using your directions, I was able to use VW to quickly remove all the commercials from a recorded football game and then exported the remaining 720 frames to MyDVD. I was then able to go to MyDVD and burn that to a DVD. BUT, the DVD only showed the 1st frame repeating over and over and it was a small screen over a large blue field. What did I do wrong?

I don't understand what you mean by "exported the remaining 720 frames to MyDVD"? Or are you talking about the Storyline panels? Please be a bit more specific in your description of what you did.

Did you preview your project in myDVD? In VW you could also Outpur (export) the video to mpeg2 (best quality) video file and play that using s video player like Windows Media Player.

Sounds to me like all you're doing is looking at the main menu and you are using one that has a small preview on it. Typically that preview window plays for about 30 seconds, which is the length of the menu theme (or whatever the menu theme you chose is set for for time).

Did you try pushing the play button on your remote?

myguggi,

Yes, I was referring to the Storyline panels that show up as separate frames of video in the bottom frame of the myDVD program. Yes, I previewed my project in myDVD and it appeared to be good to go. I think my DVD playback problem might have been caused because I didn't use the Roxio player properly.

I'll follow your advise and try to use VW to Output (Export) the video to MPEG2 for later playback using the Windows Media Player.

Oh, once I successfully export the video to MPEG2, shouldn't I be able to use any program to burn the resulting video to a blank DVD disc?

I think Larry in his post above describes what is happening correctly.

Those panels just show that your video has been "split" into 720 segments (did you really split it into 720 segments or did you use some auto mode. Each panel simply shows the 1st frame for each segment.

No you can't just "burn" the mpeg2 file to a DVD and play it on a stand-alone DVD player. You will have to use myDVD, add the mpeg2 file, create a menu if you want and then burn to DVD. A video DVD has to follow a certain standard to be able to play on a DVD player.

Walt,

Yes, I used the auto mode to split the game into 720 segments. I tried exporting the video to MPEG2 but got a windows error message that said "Video Convert 12 has stopped working" VW stops working and I can't proceed any further. I've checked my firewall and added exceptions for Roxio Creator 2010, VW, and MyDVD. I found Video Convert 12.exe but was unable to add it to the list of blocked programs exceptions list.

Firewall settings have nothing to do with your problems.

How long in time is your project? I don't know if having 720 segments could create a problem.

I would not have used the auto mode to split the video. It creates hundreds of unnecessary splits. I prefer to scan manually and create splits and make deletions.

Perhaps you could create a short project from the full project and work with that until you have determined where the problem is.

Thanks. I got into the videowave program but still can't figure out how to edit. I am trying to burn a television drama series onto DVD from my TIVO. I want to take out all the commercials, give each episode a title and then burn onto a DVD. When I view these episodes, I'd like to choose which episode I want to see via some sort of title page. I've done this before with another company's program but cannot figure out how to do this with Roxio. Can someone give me step by step help?

Walt,

Thanks so much for your help! I was finally able to follow your directions and get a Tivo'd football game to DVD. VW allowed me to edit out all the commercials and myDVD put the game on a DVD. What I didn't realize from previous postings is that the DVD I created has to be played in a DVD player and I also had to hit play on the remote to get past the 30 second menu/title banner. How can I get rid of this banner?

Two things I noticed about playback of my DVD on my Sony DVD player: 1.) There were slight pauses (approx. 1millisecond) throughout the video. 2.) The picture/video quality was ok but I would like to make it better if possible. Do you know how I can improve these two things?

One other thing I would like to work on is the conversion of .tivo files to MPEG2. I still have problems getting Roxio Creator 2010 to do this because the program bomb out before conversion takes place. If I can get these three things taken care of, I'll really be cookin with gas.

Thanks again for all your help!

Wayne

DUH!!!! I was trying to get the DVD that I put the football game on to play on my computer! Sure enough, as soon as I put that DVD in a Sony DVD player and hit the play button it worked fine.

What can I do get rid of the menu and have the DVD start playing what I want it to immediately? For example, if I create a DVD of an HBO series and I put the DVD in a player, I want it to start playing the series immediately without showing the Menu.

Thanks Larry!

Walt,

The project was reduced from 2 hours down to about an 1.5 hours after I removed all the commercials automatically. So, you're saying theres a way to bring a project into VW without splitting it so many times and then I can manually cut out commercials?

I have a 1 hour show I tivo'd of the military channel. I'll try working with that in VW & see what I come up with.

Lets assume that 60 minutes of the video contained 10 commercial breaks. Creating a split point at the start of a commercial and another at the end would mean that the video should have 20 split points, 40 for a 2 hour show. Nowhere near the 720 the auto mode created. It of course means that you have to manually scan the video to find the commercials but I can't believe that that would be any worse then going through 720 segments to delete the commercial segments.

BTW, I don't know what quality you have for the source video but you should realize that a standard 60 minute DVD can only hold 60 minutes of video at the HQ (best) quality setting. Any longer and the video has to be compressed with a loss of quality.

I too just bought Roxio Creator 2010 to burn Tivo stuff to DVDs. I followed the Roxio tutorial video and tried using Edit and Transfer>Copy and Convert Video & was able to edit commercials and start process of converting/burning the recorded video to DVD. However, when I checked the computer this morning, the process showed as complete but there was nothing on the DVD. :(

I'll try using the work around posted later in this thread and reply with my results.

Walt,

I got my football game to DVD & got it to play. I think the quality was poor because the commercials were still in it & therefore was compressed to fit the DVD. I don't understand why the commercials still showed up.

Anyway, I used the timeline split function in VW to edit out commercials from a 1hr show & am putting it on DVD right now. You talked about this and after trying it, I agree it is easier and requires less overall effort. I'll watch this DVD & see how I did with the commercial editing.

Wayne

P.S.

Let's say I wanted to split a football game into 2 halves and put each half on a separate DVD. How would I do that?

The auto mode does not remove the commercials, all it does is create split points. You still have to manually delete the commercial segments.

Suppose you have a 2 hour football game in one video file.

Launch Videowave, add the video file. Then on the timeline, find an appropriate split point near the 60 minute mark and create a split. Now using Save As, save the project as "Game-All" for example.

Now select the 2nd segment and delete ist. Save As to "Game-Part 1".

Load the "Game-All" project file again and now delete the 1st segment and Save As "Game-Part 2".

You have now created two project files, one for each half of the game. The original video will never be modified. You can now load each part video and edit it, etc. After editing, launch myDVD and add the VW project files to create a DVD.

Thanks for trying to help. I tried all the things you suggested but it simply does not perform the editing that is in the "copy and convert" section. Maybe I just couldn't figure it out, but it shouldn't be so difficult. I've decided to return the product and use another company's program that I've used before and have been successful with editing and burning a DVD.

Wayne,

I spend way too many hours trying figure out the alternative to the copy and create program. It shouldn't be so difficult. I'm going to VideoRedo's program. I've used it before and was successful. Good luck.

Is your DVD burner capable of burning DL (double layer) discs? The get about 2X what you get on a single layer. Depending on the player, there may be a slight hesitation between layers.

Steve,

Yes, I just took a hard look at my puter and it does have a double layer drive in it!

Walt,

Followed your advice and was able to create awesome reproductions of the game split into 1st and 2nd halves. Used the VW timeline and the split function to make a much better product with NO commercials this time!

One thing I noticed is that the video quality of the second half recording was a little poorer than the first half recording. I think I forgot to set HQ record quality before I recorded the DVD. I'll retry burning the second half paying closer attention to this setting.

Steve,

I checked my DVD drive out and it is not a double layer drive. When I have longer tivo recordings (football games for example), I'll split them up by quarters of halves and cut the commercials/halftime shows out. Either that, or I'll check out the cost of a suitable internal double layer DVD drive.

With everyone's help, I have been able to take my tivo recordings and can now use Roxio 2010 to put them on DVD with no problems or puter crashes.

Thanks for the help Steve!

Wayne

To get it to autoplay without a menu, you need to have one contiguous file (no chapters etc)

Go to File > New Project > DVD, no menus

Daithi,

Thanks for the tip. Lesson learned!

This showed me a new way to work with projects in My DVD!

Although this (Link) is from Creator 2009, it will help you with Creator 2010.

This is something else you should read.

One more thing. For best quality video, you can put about one hours on a single sided DVD up to about 2 hours at crappy quality. Double that for DVD DL.

There are a lot of user made tips in the "How to and Usability" or "Tips and Tricks" sections of the various Versions. Probably 90% are usable in Creator 2010. They are pinned to the top of those forums.
