glennwebster
I'm replacing an older DVD burner. The installation instructions recommend using a 80 pin cable to avoid "CRC Error (ULTRA DMA/32)" and to achieve maximum (22X) write speed. Any caveats, recommendations, or advice before I rush out and buy a new cable? Thank you. glenn webster

I would buy Taiyo Yuden (JVC) or Verbatim DVD media and burn at 8X for single layer and 4X for DL disc's.
tbrewst
The difference is mainly to get separation between the conductors because of higher speeds. Take a look
Brendon
Yes, definitely get 80-way cables for ALL IDE connections in your machine. The cables cost very little now, and give added levels of performance and protection. If you regularly plug and unplug an IDE cable to swap or disconnect drives, you should consider renewing the cables quite regularly too. Connector performance isn't so reliable after you've worked the plug on and off thirty or forty times.

gi7omy
If you can get them, try to get the round cables (a bit more expensive but they allow better airflow inside the case)
tbrewst
Those are good also. And you can get them in pretty colors too....lol
cdanteek
Round cables excellent suggestion gi7omy.. And the last sentence in tbrewst posted link! Note also that the 18" length restriction associated with the original 40-conductor cable applies to this variation as well.
tbrewst
When I was using IDE cables I used the round ones. They are definitely good for airflow and a lot easier to manage inside the case.

I have to drive about 50 miles (one way) and it was very timely. Thanks for the suggestion I did get the round cables for my HD as well as the DVD burners. Again, thanks to all for the help. What a bunch of guys !!!! glennwebster
