Question

So far I have not been able to convert my sony handycam vob files to any useable format. I cant even tell where the projects are being saved as they do not appear to be where I am saving them. I am not happy with this product...its either a con or its not as easy to use as the marketing suggests. Either way it looks like I wasted £20 that I could ill afford to waste.

Can someone offer some help as to how I get this software to actually convert my files and save them please?

What output option are you selecting? You should select "video" or one of the "WMP" options. If you select a portable device, then the program would simply think that it is connected and not save the file to your computer. In the upper right, click options. What is the default location for saving files? You can change that. Also if you are selecting a portable device, you can check the box to save the file as more than a temp file.

The default is set to 'video' on my hard drive. Im trying to save the files on my hd not a portable device. Everytime I try and save a new converted file a new 'my movies' folder is created but there isnt anything in the folder???

Yes, I am starting to be annoyed. There are several people who have tried to help and, it seems that we have to go over the same things again and again.

Where are you saving the file to? How are you looking for it? Go to Windows/Start/Search/ select the drive where you have tried to save the videos and look for *.mp4 or the name that you saved that file. Do you see anything showing up?

Please do post your computer information. I had assumed that your computer exceeded the minimum specifications.

I would rather not annoy anyone further.

Thank you for your attempts to help.

The Roxio Easy Video Copy and Convert is NOT saviing files.

I do know how to search my pc for files. The pc exceeds the min requirements.

I have followed instructions kindly given, to no avail.

The download may be faulty.

I do not wish to continue dialogue with annoyed persons.

Many thanks to all that have offered help and my apologies for causing annoyance.

Right click on the file(s) and choose Properties

Then UNCHECK the read only and click OK

Have to do this for each VOB

Try VC&C again. Hopefully that should fix the problem. Doesn't work for me caching from a DVD, but it does work if I copy the files from the disc. I doubled checked and the files are NOT read only.

Andrea,

Sometimes, frustration gets the best of us. I read the discussion thread and have seen how helpful sknis and myguggi were in their responses. To take time in posting possible resolutions and to provide snapshots in their posts to illustrate well the topic being discussed shows how serious those guys are trying to help you. This is a user forum. Members provide and share their know-how "free" of charge. :) And you got two gurus helping you.

I suggest that you continue the discussion and hopefully the issue(s) gets resolved.

Whether checked or unchecked makes no difference for me.

All files were unchecked when copied from DVD.

How long in time is the video you are trying to convert?

What format are you selecting for the video file?

How long does the progress bar show up before it closes?

What do you want to do with the converted video file?

Could you please state exactly what settings you are using for your output?

30 minutes to convert 21 minutes is quite fast depending on your system and the format you selected.

Are you still trying to convert the same video that took "half an or so"?

Thank you.

Yes I really appreciate the help they have offered and I know it is time consuming. As I dont appear to be able to follow the help, because I have been told the same things 'over and over' I think they probably shouldnt waste any more of their time. I hate to upset people because Im hopeless.

Thank you for your kind words.

I will have a look for a beginners instruction leaflet or something. For now I just feel like I must be really stupid so Im going to leave it alone.

Thanks

Andrea

Why don't you get someone you trust to come over and go through it with you???

They don't have to be a computer whiz, sometimes just the process of explaining to someone else will be enough for it to click…

Yes, thats a good idea.

I have a feeling there is something on my pc that is blocking the prog. I dont know enough about computers to test that theory though.

Thank you

I really do appreciate that people are trying to help.

My humblest of apologies ! I just tried to convert a VOB file to H264 using CCV and I get the same performance as you do. I had never tried it with VOB files but they were listed as acceptable input format in the specification. I just got a quick yellow line conversion window and the folder was created but there was nothing in it. I tried mpg2 and all I got was a zero bite file.

I deserve to be flogged ! :angry2: (at myself)

It appears to be a problem with the program . If more people try and can't do it, it may be a bug (2 people is not enough to make a decision).

I will be back with a work around soon !

Work around: Open the folder where you have the VOB files. Change the extension from VOB to mpg2. Try that. I am converting one video now.

You will have to adjust Windows to show the known extensions in order for this to work for you.

1) Select the folder and then right click and select explore.

2) Select "TOOLS" and then "Folder Options"

3) Select the View Tab.

4) In the list that shows up, put a dot next to show hidden...

I just want to let you know that I was able to take a file where I changed the extension to mpg and converted to H264 without a problem, A 65 minute video clip took about 30 minutes to convert. I used the H264 settings with adjusting the size, or converting to PAL. I got a 366 Mb file.

You may want to adjust some of the parameters for your video or break it into 2 different uploads.

OK I have put away my Flogger (it was a soft one anyway). :)

Note: I should have been more forceful and made more of an explanation in post #2.

It would have saved you (us) lots of anxiety.

Oh I am so sorry. Following the above instructions..... at instruction 2) Select TOOLS...I do not have this menu line on the window.

The menu bar shows 'organise' 'slide show' and 'Burn' but not the line above 'file....edit tools' options.

Could you please advise if I can change this? Or is there another way to access these options?

I am so sorry to present yet another thing I dont know how to do.

Thanks

Andrea

Are you still trying to convert the same video that took "half an or so"?

I want to edit the footage into smaller chunks so that I can post it on the net for family and friends. or to a site called mediafire.

Im not sure what you mean by settings?

On the output tab in the roxio prog it says save to file/folder the button at the side opens and u can change the choice on there. I have tried several different places to save to no avail. Please let me know how I can be more specific.

Thanks

Andrea

So far I have not been able to convert my sony handycam vob files to any useable format. I cant even tell where the projects are being saved as they do not appear to be where I am saving them. What did you buy for 20 pounds?

VOB files are already mpg2 files with another name. Set windows to NOT hide known extensions in Windows folder view. Change the extension from vob to mpg.

If the files are from a commercial disc, then they are DRM protected and their use is prohibited.

No the files are from my sony handy cam. they are just home movies. I cant get them to play in movie maker so thought they needed to be converted, at least that is what somebody told me. So I bought Roxio Easy DVD copy which the advert said could copy and convert to any format/device.

I dont know how to set windows NOT to hide known extensions? But thank you, I will try and work it out.

It helps a lot if you post more information. What Sony camcorder? What computer? What Operating System? What version of Movie Maker?

How did you get the files from your handycam onto your computer? Is it a disc memory camera? Did you try finalizing the disc in the camera?

When you open the Copy and Convert application, did you go to the "Convert Video" Tab? If so, go the left window, and navigate to the disc in your computer and then to the video on the disc? Do you see locks or nothing? This is what you should see:

Could you please list the full name of your software. It is certainly not Roxio Creator 2010 where you posted.

Are those vob files still in your camcorder? Is that a DVD camcorder?

Did you copy the vob files from the camcorder to your hard drive using Windows Explorer?
