1080I To 576I Dvd - Interlacing Issues

Question

Hello,

I'm not new to DVD encoding by a long way but could someone explain why I can't just drop a 1080i HD video into Toast and encode to SD DVD without converting the fields to progressive in FCP first ?

If I just leave it as it is there is very noticeable combing on vertical movement.

Problem is that converting 1080i to 1080p causes lots of issues with graphics.

Any help appreciated.

I might add that changing it to progressive doesn't seem to work either. Maybe Toast just can't encode from HD to SD ?

I've seen the same thing. I suggest using FCP to export to DVCPro50 (either NTSC or PAL) and choose progressive as the scan mode instead of interlaced. Add this video to Toast and I think you'll like how it looks.

Thanks for your reply. In the end I used FCP to convert it to DV50 but left the interlacing intact and this seems to work - this is the old Bonsai method I used many years ago with FCP and Compressor but I'm surprised Toast can't just handle HD straight.

Thanks again for helping, appreciated.
