Video Wave Stops With Hd Video

Tytalus

Question

Hi there, hope you can help:

I brought Roxio Creator 2010 mainly for its AVCHD support and as an all-in-one solution, compared to the 2 solutions I had to use for my Panasonic 720p Camera and Panasonic 1080p Video Camera (why their software wouldn't co-operate with each other is an issue Panasonic should sort out).

So far Roxio Creator 2010 appears to be doing most of the job: it takes HD video and lets me convert it to MPEG2, etc, so I can distribute video clips (mainly of my 2 year old son).

However, when I have several files I'd like to use Videowave (Edit Video - Advanced) to splice them together in the right order, then convert them, as advertised. But each time I try and do this Videowave freezes on adding the first short video clip (about 20 seconds, either through 'Add Photo/Video' or drag and drop from a folder).

All I'm getting is the Circle of Doom (Windows 7), then 'not responding' in the Window Header. CPU usuage is normal background, leave for a while (a few minutes) and it still hasn't gotten anywhere. I end up having to force closure.

Convert the files first, say to MPEG2, then I can drag and drop, Add Video, etc, to my hearts content. So does anyone know why AVCHD video should cause this fault and how do I stop having to go through a conversion process first!

Many thanks,

Ty.

Hi Sknis,

The application within the Roxio Creator 2010 suite is called 'Roxio Videowave'. It is accessed from the Home Panel via the 'Edit Video - Advanced' tab. As for using the term Roxio, I have edited my earlier post to state 'Roxio Creator 2010' to prevent mis-understandings, and although this is the Creator 2010 part of the forum I was being a bit lazy as I guess you wouldn't always navigate to this part of the forum in the same way.

As for the converting the videos clips into another format first before editing them; it was this extra step I was hoping to avoid and should be unnecessary for a video program that states it can handle AVCHD. I was hoping, neigh, expecting, the software to be able to import all my AVCHD clips into Roxio Videowave, alow me to arrange and edit the clips, before producing one MPEG2 output file. It may be this expectation that is causing the issue... :P

It purports to be able to do this, doesn't say you can't import the AVCHD file when you try and add one to Videowave, but trying to add even one AVCHD clip causes videowave to fall over.

Shame, really, if this option worked; Creator 2010 would be almost the perfect package! :(

Many thanks for looking into this.

Hi Sknis,

Thanks for the post, and for putting up with my earlier post (comes from a 2 year old not sleeping through the night...) As for my first post; I thought that the following covered it, sorry if it left out any details:

So far Roxio appears to be doing most of the job: it takes HD video and lets me convert it to MPEG2, etc, so I can distribute video clips (mainly of my 2 year old son).

However, when I have several files I'd like to use Videowave (Edit Video - Advanced) to splice them together in the right order, then convert them, as advertised. But each time I try and do this Videowave freezes on adding the first short video clip (about 20 seconds, either through 'Add Photo/Video' or drag and drop from a folder).

i.e.: I'd like to use Videowave, splice several HD video clip files together, convert the product to a format of my choosing (MPEG2 was an example).

Well, that's what I wanted to do, but Videowave failed at the first hurdle: Adding any AVCHD video file, from any storage medium (USB drive, network drive or internal) and from any of my HD cameras (1080i or 720p). The program just crashes.

You guessed right, though, once I got one project under my belt I was hoping to be able to add HD from either camera to one project, as well as other snippets (say from my old K850i phone, my wife's camera or my iPhone) to get one edited video that I could post on-line, via my server or on a CD. But first things first, eh! :D

Many thanks,

Ty

One of the issues is that the term Roxio does not mean anything. Please use the name of the application within the Suite. Are you using Copy and Convert to convert the files to mpg2?

For now, have you tried converting the videos to a high definition file with Copy and Convert and then adding those videos to Video Wave?

In "Copy and Convert: select video and then click to select custom. Select either mpg2 and then select the resolution close to the original from the camera. Select the file size (actually bit rate) to highest quality. (You will be able to make changes in that when and if you burn the videos to a disc.

What do you intend to do with the output from Video Wave? Do you have a blu-ray player and blu-ray burner? Will that Blu-ray player play AVCHD discs? For those disc, you do not need to use a blu-ray burner but you are limited to about 40 minutes of video on a standard DVD disc. If you have the blu-ray player but not the burner this is definitely the best way to go. Quality is excellent but remember the time limitations.

Come back lettoing us know how you make out and some of the answers to the questions..

I'm not saying that Creator 2010 is a prefect package but it does its best. The issue is that not all AVCHD files are made equal. Sony, JVC and Panasonic are notorious for not quite meeting industry standards.

Having said that, I just completed a one hour project for a friend who used a Panasonic camera that recorded in mt2s format. It went flawlessly. He had 0ver 100 video clips and a couple dozen images. He sat behind me telling me what he wanted and did not want in the production. It took 3 hours but at the end of the time, I had the production he wanted.

If your output was burn to disc there are much better ways to do it!

For your application, that is probabley the best way to get it done.

So, you're suggesting I should be burning discs when all I want is a single file on a HD? Why should I be having a program dictate how I should be doing it because it doesn't currently do what it's supposed to?

Also, why would you be suggesting a method that is not only pain, but also produces stuff I don't need or want?

No, sorry; For my application, I want the product to do what it was supposed to do, in the manner it is supposed to do it, producing something I want. Is that really too much to ask?

I also use Panasonic cameras (SD20 and TZ7): was the editing done with AVCHD clips or did you have to convert them first?

What else do you have running when you are running Video Wave? Check to make sure your anti-virus is NOT checking everything that is being written to your hard drive. For shot files, you may not notice it but for a compilation, you may. Are all the files on you system drive or on a USB connected hard drive? If they are on the mini server, they may give you a problem.

Are you combining the files from both the camcorders? Just as a test, try doing two projects. One with the files from the 720 camcorder; one from the other. Do both camcorders record in the same format?

If you made clear what you wanted to do in your first post, you may have had an answer by now and would have saved you and us a lot of grief.

Start the Install again, only pick Repair when it is offered…

I did understand correctly, you are sending out mpeg files instead of DVD or AVCHD on DVD???

I'll try Repair, a hassle though it is, but why am I converting to mpeg? Well, HD is great for personal use, but when I wan't relatives and friends to download clips; smaller mpeg files make their lives much easier. I'm also starting to recode video taken at our Car Club events and am limited to 5GBs of space on our web-server.

Even if I Port-Forwarded to my own mini-server, I'll be stuck with a 448kb/s upload cap, making HD video still too large for comfort (and not everybodies machines can cope with HD, such as several of my relatives who are using my old machines!).

Right, now where did I put that disk. I'll try to re-install after I've uploaded 190MB of pictures to Flickr (448kb/s Grrrrr)!

Cheers,

Ty.
