Frustrating Installation Experience With Eventual Success

ecm

Question

This post is to inform anyone, who is interested, in my installation problems with Roxio Creator 2010 and maybe to encourage others with similar problems to persevere.

Last March I purchased this product and installed it without any problems on a Dell Vostro notebook running Vista(32 bit) sp1. I didn’t have to stop any programs, disable my antivirus, or do any other type of prepreparation. In short I was a satisfied customer.

Last week I purchased a new Dell Studio XPS notebook with Windows 7(64 bit). I had no reason not to believe that the installation would be as smooth as my previous experience as Roxio said that it was Windows 7 compatible. The installation went smoothly but when I clicked on the desktop icon the little Roxio box opened and then nothing happened. As I had a Dell version of some Roxio software already installed, I thought the two were somehow conflicting with each other. I uninstalled the Dell version, but this didn’t make a difference. Thus started the long process of uninstalling and re-installing

After the second attempt I went online, found this forum and found I was not the only person with problems. I tried all the suggestions for a solution, except manually editing the registry file, and eventually got to the stage where the start-up screen came up, but when trying to start most of the functions or apps I always got a certificate missing error or a no permission to launch error. During my uninstallation process I had used a registry cleaner program to remove all the occurrences of Roxio or sonic and I thought this would be sufficient. Of course it wasn’t. In a final attempt (about the sixth), I decided to try a manual edit of the registry, and sure enough there were still several occurrences of Roxio or sonic in the registry. After removing the offending entries and again following all the other suggestions, i.e. disabling all start-up programs, disabling the antivirus, disabling the internet etc, etc, I did what would be one way or the other a final install. This time I finally met with success. All programs and functions of Roxio Creator 2010 now seem to be working normally.

I believe the definitive problem was not background apps or the antivirus or anything else, but the leftover entries in the registry file put in by the Roxio installation program and then not removed by the uninstallation program. One should not have to go through the process I went through just to get a commercial program installed. No wonder there are so many bad reviews of this product all over the internet. Just go to the Amazon site and read a few of the customer reviews. If I hadn’t had previous experience with this program and knew how well it could work I would have given up long ago. Even now if I gave a review I am not sure I would recommend it to the average user if they have windows 7 or some previous version of Roxio software installed.

To anyone who has taken the time to read this, thanks.

I've installed hundreds of applications with Mcafee up and running -- including Microsoft applications from Visual Studio, SQL Server, Sharepoint and tons of other without issues. Roxio is the simgle most unfriendly applications I have installed EVER! Nice application once you get it installed, but installation is a whip.

It's ok. There are many misguided folks who post here. You go ahead, and continue playing with fire. You will eventually get burned. ;)

Good to hear your up and running..

I have installed uninstalled C2010 at least a dozen times in Vista HP x32 and W-7 Pro x64. Not once did I need to edit any registry or use a registry cleaner program. I did delete the folders in user name application data and delete %temp% files tho...Background apps and antivirus should always be disabled no matter what software your installing...;)

Thanks for the response

For me the program didn't install until I edited the registry file. The advice to do this comes from the knowledge base of the Roxio/Sonic people,so this must be a known problem. I didn't really want to do it and only did it as a last resort. I have never had to disable my antivirus program to install any program before.

Editing the registry should be the last resort. We suggest all the other stuff just to be sure nothing else is interfering with the install. Software that monitors the registry can definitely mess things up by denying Roxio to write to the registry. Security is good, but in some instances, can do harm. Fortunately, this issue doesn't affect everyone.

Cdanteek's last sentence, in his post, was spot on. If you have been running background apps and your antivirus, when you install software, and have not had a problem before now, all I can say is you are very fortunate.
