Did I Just Waste $130?

Question

Hi, I have followed the instructions below but when I insert a dvd disc into the drive, my computer says "no media present" when there is a brand new DVD-R in it!

QUOTE (firenhancer @ Jan 12 2010, 11:14 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

It appears that all the desired videos were burnt as Data as suppose to DVD-Video. The simplest form of creation of DVDVideo without any editing would be to use application within Creator 2010 - Video copy and convert.

You could try following steps.

1. Launch Creator 2010

2. Click on Video tab in the left pane.

3. Click on Copy and Convert Video under Edit and Transfer

4. Click on Video tab

5. Click on Movies

6. Select one or more desired Video files that you intend to use to create DVD (Note : A Single DVD Video can fit upto 1 hour of good quality video)

7. Choose "DVD" as the Output, Select "Create a Disc Menu /Style" if you would want one and "Choose Disc/Disc Image" for Save file to

8. Insert a blank DVD media and Click on Green Right Arrow

What am I doing wrong??? Thanks for your help1

Hi again I am the original author of this post. I have become totally lost in your tech savvy conversation. I am about to purchase an external DVD +/- R/RW. I want to be able to plug and play using the USB port built into my Dell Latitude which is 1.60 GHz, 1.0 GB of RAM, 1 available Usb port (the other goes to my USB hub which is full). I have been unable to deteermine if the usb ports are 2.0 or not. I would like to buy one of the following external drives but I am at a total loss to understand which one will do the job without running out and buying SPECIAL discs - someone please rescue me! Many many thanks!

There's nothing 'special' about DVD+R - just a different format is all (and they work the same way)

To check the ports: open control panel, device manager and check in USB - if it says 'enhanced' - then you have USB2

Do NOT connect the drive via a hub - it probably won't work

Sure there is something special about DVD+R, you can change the Book Type DVD+R to DVD-Rom. Try that with DVD-R....

1 available Usb port (the other goes to my USB hub which is full).

It's like a outlet in a house only so much current goes to one USB port. Even tho you plugin a USB hub and load that up with devices!

I didn't want to confuse him

It looks the same and acts more or less the same (and doesn't come with a fancy price tag - hence not 'special') ;)

Physically there is a difference between a DVD-R disc and a DVD+R disc that is made during the production process. During the production of a DVD-R disc the lead-in is pre-embossed (pre-written). During the production of DVD+R discs the space is untouched. Every DVD recorder and DVD player has a limit in its firmware to write or read to this space. However, there is no limit for writing the booktype field. Therefor a DVD+R(W) recorder will be able to modify this field....

Special...;)

Firstly you could tell us what your drive is, and secondly what firmware level it's at.

Usually failure of your drive to recognize that there's a disc inserted has more to do with your drive than the burning software.

To get to your drive's make and model, open Windows Device Manager, and expand the entry for DVD/CD-ROM drives by clicking on the "+" alongside it. You should see something like this.

post-208-037300700 1284105540.jpg

My drives are a BENQ DVD DD DW1640 and an HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H22N.

To get the firmware level, right-click on the drive entry in Device Manager, and select Properties and then the Details tab. This will bring up a screen like the ones below. The firmware level is the first item after the long line following the drive name, and can be alphabetical or numeric.

Please tell us the drive identifier, and the firmware level for your drive. Please also tell us the brand and type {DVD+ or DVD-, R or RW] of your DVD discs.

Regards,

Brendon

Thank you so much Brendon. The discs I am using are Memorex DVD-R, and the ID of the drive is as follows:

IDE\CDROM_NEC_DVD+RW_ND-5100A____________________1.N0____\5&2040CED5&0&0.0.0

What does this mean?

I don't see Brendon on at the moment so I'll give you the info I found on your drive.

That drive only accepts DVD+ discs (DVD+R or DVD+RW). It will not work with DVD- discs. You'll need to get some DVD+ discs for it. and just for info, most here do not recommend using Memorex brand, as they are considered "bottom of the barrel" quality wise. If you can, get some Verbatim brand ones.

I'll try to help. Brendon's crashed now, it's a time zone thing...

Your Nec 5100A is a older drive back when -R and +R were fighting about formats.

Unfortunately you have a +R / RW only burner it won't burn to a Memorex -R disc or any -R media..

Another problem being a older and only a 4x burner, it might struggle with newer faster media and not have media IDs (MID) for the newer media in it's old firmware.

Try and borrow a +R disc from a friend or co-worker as a try...

Your drive info...

Thin as can be, light as a feather, and a

marathon-runner – all in one.

The ND-5100 DVD-Burner from NEC is thin, small, and light, in

order to save room and weight. That's why it easily fits into all

conventional laptops. At the same time, its remarkable specs

puts it at the head of its class. It is designed for DVD and CDROM

media in both 12 and 8 cm. It reads DVDs with 8x speed

and writes with 4x speed (DVD+R) or 4X ZCLV (DVD+RW). It reads

CD-ROMs with 24x speed and writes them at 16X ZCLV (CD-R) or

10X(HS), 16X(US) (CD-RW) speed. A midget which gets giant results!

WOW you guys answered SO FAST!!! Thank you!!! Now, which drive should I go out and buy? I want to burn my FlipVideos onto DVD discs that can be played on anyone's DVD player (like my mom!). The drive I currently have I purchased separately to fit into my Dell Latitude laptop. Should I just go with an external burner that hooks up via USB port? Thank you so much for your help!

If your going to use it with that laptop, that would probably be the best option..

Of course, you could always check with Dell to see if they have an updated burner for your laptop model. However, it may cost more than an external if they had one at all. Would depend on how old your laptop is.

With a NEC 5100A 4x +R/RW DVD Burner, that question is answered, isn't it?

when I say 'not special' I'm not referring to book type or anything else (the fact that -R discs don't have that to me is more of a defect).

They're not 'special' in the sense that they're uncommon, have a big mark up in price or the ability to do anything strange (like play in certain players only like the infamous 'music CD-Rs that cost way over the normal price)

But we're not here to argue semantics

Of course, you could just buy disc that your burner will accept. Every modern DVD palyer will play both +R and -R.

Do you want the ability to burn Light Scribe discs? Do you want the ability to do double sided DVD (up to 2 hours at best quality D=video on a disc and up to a little less than 4 hours at poor quality)? Your laptop would probably not be able to handle blu-ray (guess) so I would not look at those for now.

Go to cnet and look at the ratings for different burners. They also have the price range that you can filter.

Also go to Amazon.com and look at the ratings there. Read some with a grain of salt; some people like to rant and have no real reason.

Look at newegg.com for some options and sales also.

"double sided DVD" were single layer flippers, pre DL DVD's. I'm not sure they are even available today!

No one sells a single layer burner anymore, they all are DL . You might find some listed on that cnet site "ratings for different burners" I saw dates from 2004 to 2007!

Along with newegg, go to Tigerdirect, mwave, zipzoomfly, .com and see what's available in today's world. They list burners you can actually buy from them today in stock and current models...;)

Yep' should have used the term dual or double layer DL.

I'm sure the OP could read about the stores that still sell the devices (cnet). Contact manufacture is code for obsolete. I did not go through all the filters for how to list the options such as review date, rating, costs, etc.

I'm sure the OP appreciates the other sources for devices. Mine were intended to be examples; not recommendations.
