Thanks Larry. The BOT3 version that came with HP has a schedule of DAILY, WEEKLY, MONTHLY but I don't see any place to actually specify a time to run. Just to confirm (before yelling at HP) you're saying the full blown BOT3 from Roxio has true scheduling options? In other words, say I want it to run a differential backup every Saturday at 12:53 PM I could do that?

Ok, so you do have scheduling capability, just not any advanced choices for scheduling. I'm not sure off hand oif the retail BOT3 Suite has a more advanced scheduling option(s) in it's GUI or not as I don't have one readily available to look at. Maybe one of the other regulars here can look when they have a minute.

That said however, what you can do with the version you have is to set up a schedule (say a weekly one) and save it. This creates a task in Windows Task Scheduler. Go into Windows Task Scheduler and you'll find it there with the day/time you created the project as the setting for it to run. Just open it in there and you can adjust the time and day to what you want it to be.

I'd have to look at my copy to see if you can set a time but off hand I think you can.

There is a lot you can do with BOT3 Suite that you can't do with the version that came in Creator 2010.

As far as BOT 4 I haven't played that much with the version in Creator 2011,I've been using the full blown BOT3 suite.

If I can remember I'll take a look later at the BOT3 to get you a better answer about setting the time for the scheduled back up.

Cool - thanks! Larry suggested looking to see if it's scheduled in Windows Task Scheduler. I hope to be able to check that out later as well.

I also sent Roxio an e-mail and got the following response from them...

After reviewing your notes, I understand that you purchased 2 computers from HP and opted to have BackOnTrack 3 but you looked at Creator 2011 and you saw that it provides a BackOnTrack 4.

Did you purchased the stand alone BackOnTrack 3 application? Because if you are looking for the BackOnTrack 4 stand alone application, that is not yet available in Roxio. You can only have it if you purchase the Creator 2011. About the scheduling of backup, BackOnTrack is designed to work automatically in the background, hence you cannot schedule a time for it to perform a backup. Check the article below:

Can I schedule my backup?

Knowledgebase Article : 000051BO

http://kb.roxio.com/search.aspx?URL=/content/000051BO&PARAMS=set-locale=en

I guess that answers all questions. Seems goofy that they don't have a stand alone BOT4 available. In any case, it does appear to be running in the background via Task Scheduler. Thanks to all!

After messing around trying to find the answers to this question I had BOT kick in automatically this weekend.I canceled the backups of course but they did kick in.

In BOT4 you can set the time and date though, unlike in BOT3.

I'm still hoping to get some kind of indication on whether there's going to be a stand alone BOT4 and if possible when.

Ok,sorry for the delay.

I've had a chance to look at different things and here's what we've got.

In both Creator 2010's BOT and the BOT3 Suite you do not have an option to set a scheduled time for a backup.

In the version that comes in Creator 2011 (BOT4) if you click a few buttons and get to Advanced Scheduling then you can set a specific time and/or date for your backups.

I've also sent a message to Roxio asking if they can give me any info on a stand alone BOT4 product.

I'll probably hear back next week and will let you know what I find out.

No typo.

Creator 2011 does have a version of BOT4 in it.

I don't know if there is going to be a stand-alone BOT4 suite or not.One hasn't been released yet.

Thank you! Would you happen to know in BOT4 if you can actually schedule a backup to run as opposed to having to manually run it? I was shocked that this couldn't be done. Very generic of Roxio to leave out a feature ESSENTIAL to running backups!

Roxio did not leave out that feature in the regular version of BOT3 (it's listed as a feature on their product page here: http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/backontrack/suite/features.html )

If it's missing from the version HP supplied, then it sounds like they gave you their modified OEM version of BOT3. OEM versions almost always have some features of the full product left out or disabled. If you paid extra for BOT3 from HP, I'd contact them about it.
