Capture Audio From Tape Player/boombox

when5975

Question

I am trying to digitalize my tape collection. I have hooked up a cord from the headphone jack of the boombox to the supplied cable (the cable that came with Roxio). The Roxio cable is hooked up to the computer through the USB port. I am using the Roxio Creater software subsection "Digitalize Tapes and LPs". I go through the process and when I am done, I play my recording on Windows Media but there is no sound. I have tried clicking on every option under "Capture From". Can anyone please help? Thank you.

Rhe devivce is designed o capture video and aidio and I doubt if audio alone will work

Get a lead with the 3.5 mm stereo plugs and connect that from the audio output to line in on the back of the computer, check volume levels and do it that way

Thanks, but I am not sure I understand. What do you mean by "get a lead" and what is the "line in" on the back of the computer. Sorry! If you would elaborate for me I would appreciat it, thanks.

Try it this way, under options save to a location you want and what file extension you want, wav, mp3.. From there you will burn it to disc...

I only have a headphone out on the boom box. I use a Y cord from the headphone jack (black) to the USB Capture Device, Audio left/right in (black red)...

Do you mean a cord with only one plug on each end? I have a cord that I use to hook up an mp3 player to my car aux input? Will that cord work?

I believe that is how I have hooked up my boombox to the computer (via a y cord from the headphone jack in boombox to usb port on my computer). I select "line in usb port" on Roxio's dialog box. After I stop recording, I go to the file and try to play it on Windows Media Player, and no sound comes out. Although, I do see that a file is being played. In the main Roxio Creator Menu Screen, should I select "digitalize tapes" or "capture from sound card"?

You select on the Capture from........ Line (USB 2861 Device) as shown in Post #5.

No one has asked this yet.

When you say you are recording are the meters for the recording level moving?

If not then you are not getting any input to the application and a couple of things could be wrong.Either the connection is not right or the Capture from setting is wrong.

Set them just like cd said. You should be able to either use Capture from Sound Card or Digitize LP's and Tapes.

If you're not seeing the meters move then you won't have any sound as you recorded silence.

Touchdown!!! I finally got the sound to capture. You were right, that I was recording silence. However, I was not able to use the y cable hookup which was included in the software package. I finally got this to work by using the cable for playing my ipod in my car through the car's aux jack. I connected one end to the boombox headphone port, and the other end to the lin in port of my computer. I am so thankful for everyone's input, and now, I hope to be happily converting all my old tapes into mp3 files. Thanks again,

Angela.

When you are connecting the boombox to the Line in on your sound card you should be using a cord with the same jacks that are shown in post #4.

You then would select the Line In in the Capture from.

When using the Line in jack on your computer sound card you have to make sure that the Line In is selected in your sound card. This varies depending on what O/S you are using.

Hers is an example from Vista.

If you have problems selecting the Line In get back on here and tell us what O/S you have.

Well, thanks for your suggestions and time, but I still can not get any sound to play...I am thinking that maybe this Roxio software is not what it claimed. I really only needed it to digitalize my tapes, and also to convert video to mp3....But it looks like it is not as I thought.

Will Windows Media Player play any audio file on your system?

Are you using Easy Audio Capture like the posted pic above?

In Roxio what format are you capturing them to?

Thanks for your help. I am using Easy Capture (which I get by clicking on Capture Audio from Sound Card). I select "WAV (Recommended)" under "Capture Settings. As far as I know, I am following the picture above.

I have also tried another way which is to select "Digitalize Tapes" and essentially follow the same settings, using capture Source "Line in USB".

The last way I tried was simply connecting the boombox to the computer with the same cable I use to play my mp3 player in the car (using aux input port in the car).

Finally, another person above indicated that Roxio may not be set up to capture only audio using the y cable. Maybe I misunderstood.

Have you personally been able to digitalize your tapes using the y cable and roxio software? Again, thanks.
