Reds Washed Out On 3D Conversion

Andy Iona

Question

Hi all,

I just got started with Roxio 2011 and it’s great. However, every video I convert to 3D (Anaglyph) washes out the red color on the finished video (Red is now equal to Blue). I tried auto color correction, but nothing happens, period. All ideas gratefully received.

Also, it would be neat to use real D. Does anyone know what kit I would need ?

Thanks in advance

Andy

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your replies. I have attached two shots, to show the difference I get, which were taken from a file I converted in 3D. I get the same with everything I convert – reds = blues

Since my last posting, I played around with the settings and if I play back with the display setting as Green / Magenta (rather than Red/Cyan) I get the reds back. Kind of strange as the glasses are Red/Cyan. I also find it somewhat better if I change from L/R to R/L.

There is something wrong with the image on the left. It should not be that washed out.

Or am I reading your post incorrectly.

Are you wearing your red and blue cardboard glasses?

I see a top and bottom image no left and right image, of course I'm not wearing cardboard glasses!

Plastic actually.

I see two images side by side. The one on the leftis washed out and has a play arrow in the middle. In the one on the right, I can see the red bards on the flag.

Screen resolution/size (?)

I looked and I don't have any videos where I have a lot of red originally so a conversion would not help me see what you are seeing.

Andy, when you watch the cyan/red 3D video, you are wearing color filters. It is the nature of the beast. Did you read the pinned post at the top of this section re: 3D?

Real 3D first requires a 3D camera/camcorder, glasses, monitor etc.. Unless you are a 3D purist, you may choke at the prices.

Hi Sknis,

I really appreciate your reply and will take another look at the posting on 3D. However, I should have explained that the color gets washed out, on the output, even before I put the Anaglyph glasses on (I appreciate the glasses will alter the picture). Should this be happening or have I gotten something wrong ?

Sounds like Real D is real expensive, so I may have to pass on that for now.

Thanks again

Andy

Again natural because of the cyan/red image. How badly are they washed out. Take a screen shot of it or of a 3D converted image and post it here.

Yes & No…

You are seeing this:

But if you look at your 3D Preview selection in VW:

And set it to Left:

Or set it to Right:

You will get a more typical 'preview'…

But to see a close approximation of the output, colorwise, look at your source while wearing your glasses… :D

Hi Sknis,

Should this be happening or have I gotten something wrong ?

This is from the Roxio pdf "Shooting for 3D Production" which is mostly about still images but states that most of the still image guidelines apply to video, too.

When producing for anaglyph (red/cyan) distribution, mind the colors. Red/Cyan anaglyph viewing isn't friendly to reddish colors, converting them to yellows or blacks.

If you can control what your subjects are wearing, stay away from reds, oranges and similar colors, favoring grays and blues. For serious shoots, however, you should check your colors out beforehand to make sure they look good in anaglyph. If you're out shooting casually, keep in mind that anaglyph red/cyan may not be the best technique to capture the beauty of a red rose.
