Error 43

Toastm3

Question

Hi ,

I’m trying to extract DVD clips from several different unencrypted DVD’s using Popcorn 4.0.2. I followed the procedure discussed on the Discussion Group 12-7-09 #5. It all works well until I select create disc image. I then get the error code 43. Then try to just burn the project to a DVD disc to see if that would work. But I get the same error code 43. Any thoughts on what is going wrong. Thanks for any help.

I went back to look at the post you're referring to but I'm still not certain what is your process for adding the clips. Did you use the Media Browser and then make your selection in the window that appears after trying to add video from the browser to the main Popcorn window? Are your clips real short (what's the shortest time?). I just did a test and didn't encounter the error.

Thanks you for your response. After reading your response, I decided to try my project again. Followed the steps that was outlined in the above mentioned post & this time no error 43. The disc image was completed & it did play in DVD Player. So I decided to create another dics image of the same project but add a menu to it. The disc image was created & I mounted it. But when I try to burn a DVD from it, a window appeared saying that I needed to unmount it in the Finder. Went to Finder under File but the "eject" function was not highlighted. Could not figure out another way to unmount or eject the disc image. Decided to take a break & shut off the computer. When I went back to the project,n no window appeared telling me to unmount the disc image in Finder & was able to burn a DVD from the disc image. Since Popcorn is behaving strangely maybe I should reinstall it? Any thoughts on this? Thanks again for your time & help.

When you choose the image file setting in the Copy window to burn the disc image, Popcorn automatically mounts it.. This, in turn, could automatically launch DVD Player depending on your Mac's settings. I'm guessing that Popcorn wanted to unmount and remount the disc image but couldn't unmount it because something else was accessing it; possibly DVD Player. Popcorn does have an unmount button in its copy window so that might have been another way to get it unmounted rather than using the Finder.

Glad it is working even though it is being quirky about it.

I'm getting error -43 and was hoping to find an answer on this thread.

I'm extracting clips from home DVDs and trying to save as disc image for copying to another DVD. Neither saving as disc image or copying direct to DVD work. With both I get "Could not [do this operation] because (ID=-43)."

I used the same source DVDs to do a similar thing with the same Popcorn 4 program about a year ago and it worked. Anyone know what ID -43 is?

What steps are you doing? Are you using the DVD setting in the Media Browser to access the clips and then adding to Popcorn? As an experiment try choosing the disc copy setting and making a disc image of the entire DVD. Then mount that disc image to see if you can extract the videos from the disc image rather than the disc.

Thanks tsantee. A couple of clues:

Originally, I wasn't using the media browser, but dragging the DVD from the desktop into the copy DVD window and extracting clips from there. Then when I had all the clips I wanted from multiple DVDs, I'd try to save as disc image or copy directly to DVD & got error -43. (This is the method I used last year that worked fine using the same source DVDs.)

So I tried using the media browser and that worked - but only if I do one clip at a time. When I added another clip and tried it, got error -43.

Now I'm following your suggestion and saving the entire DVD as a disc image. It's copying, but taking FOREVER & I have a lot of DVDs to extract from. I'll report what happens after the DVD is saved as a disc image and I try to mount it, extract & copy. But I'm thinking even if it works, it may just be too time-consuming to be doable.

In the meantime, if this additional info gives you any ideas, I'd appreciate it!

Okay I made a disc image of one full DVD, then extracted one clip from it and tested it. It worked to copy it onto a new DVD.

Then I added a second clip from the same original DVD and tested it. It worked to copy both clips from one DVD onto a new DVD.

Then I made a disc image of a second original DVD and extracted a clip from it. When I tried to copy the three clips onto a new DVD I got the -43 error message. Same thing when I tried to make a disc image of the three clips that came from two different DVDs.

Makes no sense to me. Any help?

.

Couldn't find those specs. Where would they be?

When you add a video to the main Popcorn window the specs should be just below the title in smaller font size. You may also see the specs pop up by placing the cursor over a title in the media browser for a few seconds.

FYI, I also contacted Roxio support and got this answer:

"Thank you for contacting Roxio Customer Care.

"After reviewing your notes, I understand that you are getting error message 'Couldn't complete the last command because ID=-43.' when extracting clips from home DVDs to combine and copy to new DVDs using Popcorn 4.

"We do apologize for the delayed response. Upon checking the error codes received from Mac systems, we saw that theError Code: -43, means 'File not found'. A requested file could not be located and retrieved. If the file is not really missing, check for a possible disk damage. So that we can isolate the issue, please provide us the needed information below:

> What are the exact steps taken?

> The type of media you are using.

> What kinds of files were you using

> Provide a screenshot of the error message you received."

I've sent them all the info and I'll post if they have any answers.

I got another reply from Roxio support. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me, but maybe for someone else with the same problem:

"Thank you for contacting Roxio Customer Care.

"I understand from your notes that you're having issues creating your project in Popcorn 4 and getting an error code -43.

"Sorry for the late response. To address this concern, the error code that you getting is a Mac error messge basically stating that a file not found or folder not found error. You may follow the steps below that may isolate the issue

"Step 1: Unlock Your Account in changing settings.

a. Apple Logo > System Preferences > Select your account > Click Padlock then type your password.

b. Make sure that Padlock (located in the lower left side is unlock) > click show all.

"Step 2: Perform Disc Utility to reset all permissions.

a. Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disc Utility.

b. Selec Macintosh HD > Click Repair Disc Permission.

"Step 3. Create a new user account

a. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Accounts.

b. If some settings are dimmed, click the lock icon and type an administrator name and password.

c. Click Add (+) and type the user's name.

d. If you don't want to use the short name generated automatically, type a new short name. (Once the account is created, you won't be able to change the short name.)

e. Type the user's password in the Password and Verify boxes.

f. Type a hint to help the user remember the password if they have trouble remembering it at login.

g. Click Parental Controls and select options to determine what the user can do with the computer.

"Step 4. Try to burn the original source file by dragging it on the software. If it still persist, there is a possibility that something may have change on the source file.

"If you have any questions about the suggestions above, please update this webticket with additional information that may help."

I sent this back and will update if I get anything else. In the meantime any other ideas?

"I followed the steps and got the same error (-43).

"I forgot to mention in my last post that I installed Popcorn 4 and updates on another Mac computer and got the same results with a new install.

"I don't see how the source file could have changed - the DVDs are the identical ones I stripped clips from and made new DVDs from about a year ago - on the same computer.

"Of course, it's very frustrating. I was thinking about just giving up and buying Toast 10, but user reviews of that version are terrible, and I don't want the same frustrations.

"Can you give me any more info about the error? (I can try contacting Apple about it.) Any other ideas? Thank you."

Sorry but I have a crush of project deadlines due to the holidays and haven't had any time to see if I get the same results with Popcorn. I usually don't leave things undone like this but it'll be after Christmas before I can do that level of troubleshooting. I don't see anything that is a clue for why this is happening.

Please don't apologize tsantee! I appreciate your giving any of your time at all to my problem!

I heard again from Roxio and they asked me "Could you please let us know what is the size format and location of the clips you are trying to copy to a DVD project."

My response:

I'm not sure what you mean by "size format" and "location." The video clips I am trying to copy are stripped from DVDs that I made on a DV-Recorder from old VHS tapes. They are the identical source DVDs that I used Popcorn 4 with successfully last year for a similar project.

The video and audio specs are:

Video: MPEG-2, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps

Audio: Dolby digital, stereo, 48000 Hz

If that's not what you need, please let me know what you need and where to get it?

I will be out of town, so please do not close this ticket if I don't respond right away. Thank you.

So that's where I am with them at this time. Happy Holidays - and I'll check back in about a week or so!
