No Signal On Capturing From Vhs

I am using windos XP and Roxio creator version 9.I am also using a 'Pinnacle Dazzle' capture device that i bought some years ago and was accompanied by Pinnacle Studio 9, a programme that i never really liked very much and no longer use. I am successfuly capturing most VHS tapes that i bought in the UK over the years. But, when i try to capture from some videos that i bought from America some years ago the capture working area tells me that their is no signal. I have tried changing the TV format through all the available PAL and NTSC ones available but it still doesn't find a signal.Can anyone advise if i would have better luck if i purchased either the latest version of Roxio Creator or any other of Roxios products as i do like their programmes and find them easy to use.
