Bd-Re Burn Issue Toast 10 And Verbatim Bd-Re

Did a search here and not found another topic this specific...

 

 

 

OS X 10.6.2, Toast 10.0.8, OWC External 12x Blu-ray drive with Pioneer BDR-205.

 

Have been using drive with Toast for about 5 months burning mostly Verbatim BD-Rs but 6 or 7 Verbatim BD-REs as well. All was fine till today.

 

When I attempt to burn a BD-RE I get the following error message: "Couldn't set up track for writing."

 

If I attempt to erase a virgin BD-RE I get the following error message:

 

The Drive reported an error:

Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR

Sense Code = 0x15, 0x02

POSITIONING ERROR DETECTED BY READ MEDIUM

 

I am using the same batch of BD-REs all along....

 

BD-Rs still seem to burn OK

 

Any ideas???

 

At the moment I am attempting to erase a BD-RE that I previously burned to see what happens. It is taken 2 hours already to erase but so far it seems to be erasing.... Not sure how long a full erase on a BD-RE 25GB should take.

 

I doubt it is bad media only because it is from the same batch that I have been using along without any problems???

 

Drive is not that old, so it should not be a dirt issue???

It might be dust in the drive. Just a guess.

Did some additional trial and error and found the following:

 

I took a BD-RE disk that I had previously burned OK and erased it. For some reason it took in excess of 3 hours to do a complete erase. I did notice that the drive was making a "churning" noise now and then like the heads were moving around... The erase finally completed and I attempted a burn. The burn got to 1min 32sec away from completing and I got this error message:

 

The Drive reported and error:

Sense Key = HARDWARE ERROR

Sense Code = 0x44

INTERNAL TARGET FAILURE

 

I tried another erase (this time it took less than an hour to erase...) and tried the burn a second time and got the same message a the 1:32 point away from completing....

 

Maybe this along with the info in my original post will help to determine if this is a drive issue or a media issue...

 

AGAIN, so far this ONLY happens when burning Verbatim BD-RE disks. the regular BD-Rs seems to burn fine...

 

Are BD-REs that much more finicky?? (sp?)

I find that sometimes, after a few erase/re-burn cycles, BD-REs stop working and need to be binned. I have a stock of about six BD-REs and one failed permanently after about ten erase/re-burns. The others are still going strong.

 

(I found a similar situation with DVD-RWs.)

Ah, but in this case it is the new, never recorded on BD-REs that are the bigger problem. I am having better luck with those I have erased and re-used.

Have you checked if there is a firmware update available for your drive?

Actually there is.... Which brings up one other question.... The only firmware update I can find so far is an .exe file that must be run from Windows.... Should I be able to find a firmware update that will run from OS X???

The firmware update probably will support the newer media. You can check with xlr8yourmac.com for information about whether it can be upgraded on a Mac. My guess is you'll need to connect to a PC.

Very unlikely - most drive manufacturers don't even know Macs exist!

 

Seriously, this is why I keep my Blu-ray writer in an external enclosure, so I can (easily and temporarily) connect it to a Windows PC - precisely for firmware updates. I updated my LG GWW-H20L recently this way.

BTW: Re your "out of box" failure of your virgin BD-RE: I would just try a "full erase" one last time, before I either (i) try and send it back to the seller (presumably even blank media has a warranty?) or just (ii) bin it anyway.
