Toast 10

I just had a hard drive crash and had a new hard drive installed. Running Snow Leopard 10.6.5 and toast 10.0.8. When I try to burn a DVD it comes up with an error message "could not record disc because you do not have the required permissions. Result code = -5000" has anyone come across this error message and if so how did you fix it?

What are you trying to burn? Is this a data disc? My sense is you're trying to copy something that has permissions set in a way to prevent Toast from writing the files.

Could you please describe what settings you were using in Toast and anything else that might help in troubleshooting this. What were you trying to burn?

I have all my home videos in MP4 format and I wanted to create a BD image file that I could use to burn BD-R discs whenever I needed them. So it's pretty straight forward, I dragged the MP4 file to the Toast window and clicked on the Create Image button.

Does the error come up immediately after clicking the Save as Disc Image button? This is an uncommon problem so I'm trying to figure out how to follow the same process as you are following to see if I can replicate it. What are the specs for the mp4 videos and are they on an internal or external hard drive?

The error does not pop up immediately. If I look in the folder where I am saving the image, it creates a *.toast file. After about a minute the error pops up. The specs on the video (which is created on the local drive):

I don't have any video that meets that spec because of its 6 audio channels. I might be able to use my Turbo.264 HD to create one from a source that has 5.1 audio. I'll get back to you on that. In the meanwhile, control click on one of those video files in the Finder and choose Get Info from the contextual menu. At the bottom of the Get Info window there are the permissions for that file. It should state that you can Read & Write that file. If it doesn't, change the permissions to allow that.

 

Addendum: I was able to create a h.264 video with 5.1 audio and it worked fine with Toast. The encoding leaves a 2-channel stereo audio track, however. I'm sorry, but I don't what can be the reason for the error you're getting other than it really being a permissions issue.

Was able to determine the problem. As a test I installed Toast 10 onto my wife's computer and it worked, so it turns out to be specific to my Mac mini. I searched the library/preferences folder (both system and user) for previous versions of toast, deleted them all and reinstalled. It now works, I can both save Image files and burn blu-ray discs. Thanks for looking into this!
