I'm getting a "16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem" error stating: The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. I'm getting this error when trying to run the "driveup5.e.5v" update because Easy CD Creator 5 is not detected my DVD burner.

any help with this is appreicated....

Without any clues like what Version of Windows, the id string of your burner (see FREQUENT ANSWERS for more info), we really can't make any good guesses.

Have a look at this.... http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...24767#appliesto

If your DVD burner is fairly new, it probably wont work in ECDC 5 anyway as the last driver update was well over a year ago.

Also ECDC 5 only created data DVD's. no movies.

The DVD burner is almost 2 years old. I've used it before with Easy CD Creater 5 on this same PC but have reinstalled since and now this is the first time I'm trying to use it again but the same update I used the last time, doesn't seem to work now. I also know that I can't burn DVD movies with EZCD 5. I'm only trying to burn a data DVD.

I have never seen that error before on this forum. It is not a Roxio error.

You say you "re-installed". Maybe if you tell us why you re-installed it may give us some clues as to what is causing your error. (did you update your Operating System.......)

Did you look at the link I sent you.

I wiped out my harddrive and did a fresh install of the OS. I do this every year or so for maintenance. Since I don't use the DVD burner that often, I didn't install the update when I reinstalled my PC about 6 months ago. Now I'm trying to install the update and I get that goofy error.

Do you have all the latest patches for XP installed? If so, I might guess that one of those is having a problem with ECDC 5, which may have some legacy 16 bit driver code in it. "NTVDM" just sounds like a driver type problem. Keep in mind that ECDC 5 is not supported (though some have made it work) with XP SP2. One workaround may be to reinstall XP, but prior to applying SP2 install ECDC 5, and then apply SP2.

Other than that, which is only a Wild-A$$-Guess, I don't know where the problem might be.

Roxio Easy CD Creator Platinum 5

Installation Steps

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You must be on at least version 5.1 to run under WinXP. Version 5.1 and later run just fine under WinXP/sp1.

In order to run under WinXP/sp2, you may have to do a complete uninstall and reinstall AFTER applying the sp2 update. Please be advised that Roxio has said they do not support Version 5 running under WinXP/sp2. But many folks have gotten it to work successfully.

You may want to check under "Recorder Support" on the Roxio web site to see which version first supported your cdrw drive, if you have a newer device. You will need to use the actual drive-id string found under "properties" for your cdrw drive.

Do a complete and clean uninstall of any previous versions of Easy CD Creator.

You can do this via "Control Panel" - "Add/Remove Software".

You can also download and run "roxizap" to cleanout any remnants left behind (although this may not be necessary).

Get it here: http://tools.roxio.com/support/tools/roxizap.exe

Be sure no other packet writing software (such as InCD from Nero) is installed.

Download the updates for Platinum 5 from the Roxio site.

Currently, you want 4, including: 5.3.5, photo, video, & 5.3.5driveup.

Note: if you are installing the "Basic" version, you only need the "Basic" 5.3.5 update and the same driveup535 described above. You cannot apply Platinum updates to a "Basic" program installation.

Install ECDC 5 from the cd.

If you get a warning message from WinXP/sp2 that the software may cause instability problems on your system you can tell it to install anyway - but you are proceeding at your own risk, since Roxio has not ensured the software will run under all WinXP/sp2 situations.

If the install says there are no supported recorders – tell it to install anyway.

(the updates will add support for some newer drives)

DO NOT REBOOT - Once again - DO NOT REBOOT!

Run all the updates – be sure to run 5.3.5 before the 5.3.5 driveup.

Then Reboot.

Updating ECDC5

------------------------

Make sure you have downloaded the correct version for what you have installed.

You need the "Platinum" 5.3.5 update if you have the full retail version installed, or the "basic" 5.3.5 update if your installation came with your computer or burner.

If you are not sure what you have, try to run Soundstream, Sound Editor, or Label Creator. They only come with the Platinum version - so if you don't have these - you need the "basic" update. The Platinum 5.3.5 update will not run against a ECDC5 "basic" installation.

-----------------------

Are you possibly trying to apply the driveup updater against a version of ECDC earlier than 5.3.5?
