Imac Not Showing Up In Now Playing List

jtseltmann

Question

Just working through setting up my new iMac and I think I am having an issue with having my mac show up in the now playing list. I have installed all the software and started the server and shared out a folder that has one or two .mpg movies in it. These are movies that I know tivo can show as I have them shared from my old PC before. Is there anything else I need to do? I have successfully shared music and photos just fine. The Mac2Tivo window shows two available files..but the now playing list shows only a .Tivo file that I have transfered off the tivo...( I used an article from here to enable the .Tivo files to be able to be transfered back to tivo. I have three TivoHDs...

Any help or suggestions...totally new to Mac world...

Thanks.

Have you browsed through Mac2Tivo Help? The Mac2Tivo window says to drag in a folder containing videos you want to see on your TiVo. The application then needs to convert them to the format and size that TiVo can play. When that conversion is done they should appear on your TiVo.

I did read the whole thing...and yes it sure does say that but there is an Add button on the main window. It says "folders shared" 1 and item count 4. It says nothing or does not do any sort of conversion when I add files. I want to share a folder where there could be any number of videos...I would like to be able to choose them and see them on the THD not convert every single one of them in the event that I want to see them. That does not sound right at all to me. The Mac2Tivo shows that it is sharing video with my tivo dvr...it says nothing about how video will be converted. None of the directions or instructions say wait while all of your video is converted. I appreciate the information truly but it doesn't make sense...any other ideas?

Are you using the Mac2Tivo that's in the Toast 10.0.8 folder? Earlier versions did not work with the TiVo Premiere in the way you describe.

yes, i'm using the Mac2Tivo that was downloaded with the Toast 10 software. It does work sharing the photos and music...perfectly. It is just the Movies that is not working. I'd like to know why...but as of now I'm using PyTivoX and streaming them. It works fantastic without the useless transfer to the tivo box itself.

When you say previous versions didn't work this way...How did they work? The Mac2Tivo interface window is very small. Just a place to add directories where compatible movies live. Then it says they should show up on the Now Playing list. The server status says i'm sharing...it makes no sense. When everything else works...this is just a mystery. I know there is one valid file '.mpg' in the directory also.

I just want to understand it...honestly. I've been a windows guy for so long...I'm trying to learn all I can about the mac.

Thanks for the help!

Jeff

Mac2Tivo is only about video. The audio and photos are accessed by the Tivo in a different way. Until the Toast 10.0.8 update a Tivo Premiere could see the Mac for video streaming but there wouldn't be any videos in the Tivo's list. At that time your workaround of using PyTivoX was the only option. When version 1.1 of Mac2Tivo arrived the application worked with the Premiere. When you add a folder of videos that are not standard-definition MPEG 2 files the application converts the videos to that format in the background and then transfers them to the TiVo hard drive. You note that you added folders containing videos that you know are already in the Tivo-playable format so that isn't an issue. It sounds like you aren't using version 1.1. Maybe this article will give you additional troubleshooting help.

T, Thanks for helping out..I read that. I am using the 1.1 version. I don't know what could be wrong. I know I have valid mpg files there. It is just strange...I have limited knowledge so far with the Mac but I have been using tivo, tivodesktop, networked them all, converted, burned etc videos for years now. I have TivoHD's though and not the Premier. Does this work only with Premier? I upgraded my THD with a 1TB drive last year so it is not something i'm going to change any time soon..not just for the HD interface etc. Thanks again.
