Custom Output Resolutions For "video Copy & Convert"

GRich

Question

I have a Samsung Focus which has an 800x480 native resolution on its screen. None of the video output options in "Video Copy & Convert" are good for this resolution. If I say I have an iPad, I can get 720x480 as an option. This would work fine for 4x3 content. However when converting 16x9 content, this encodes bars at the top and bottom. The phone sees that the video is 480 high though so when played it won't zoom in and I get bars on the sides. The screen is small enough without wasting space on all sides.

The closest 16x9 formats that are available are 640x360 (not full resolution) or 1280x720 (overkill). Is there any way to get the software to accept custom resolution options or a custom output type? What I'd like to have is H.264/800x480/30fps video with AAC/48KHz/16bit/Stereo audio. It looks like this may be possible through the XML files in the Templates directory, but I'd rather not just start editing with no guidance.

Try 720x480 widescreen

I mentioned in my first post that 720x480 doesn't give the results I want. I end up with bars on top/bottom as well as left/right when watching on the phone. Calling it widescreen doesn't change that. I've attached a picture of the settings available. If there is something else I am missing, please point it out.

I could use Videowave, but I would like to use copy & convert because it provides a simpler process for the conversion use case that is presumably why it exists in the product. What I'm trying to understand is just how limited its functionality is. I chose iPad just as a representative example and because it gave the closest resolution options to what I want. Which all brings my back to my original question. Is there a way to get other output resolutions in "Roxio Video Copy & Convert"?

Is your original video 800 by 480? If not trying to force a 4*3 or a 16*9 into that odd ratio (4*2.4) will probably give you some stretched or squashed video that won't be very pleasing. If you take some video with that phone, what ratio is the output when you put it on your computer?

No, there is no way to do what you ask. Ask Samsung if they have any advice.
