Copy Dvd

Grampa Dave

Question

It seems that EMC 8 has had the ability to compress a larger than 4.7 DVD removed. I have been using EMC 7 & 7.5 with non encrypted DVD's and have always had the choice of comressing or using a DL disk. The cost of DL disks up here in Canada is very expensive, so I would prefere to be able to compress the video's.

If anyone can tell me how to compress within Copy DVD using EMC 8 I would be most thankfull.

Thanks

Grampdave

I used EMC 8 to copy a DVD for the first time this morning. It did not compress the file and therefore I needed to use a DL disk, which worked perfectly. I proceeded to try another DVD to see if it happened again and it worked fine on a single layer.

I had this happen once but my cure was drastic.

New HD, new install of XP SP2 and new install of V8.

I think you might be able to get by with uninstall/reboot/reinstall of V8 alone…

No need to. For some unknown reasons, it's not happening now and I've done nothing. It's got to be those dang aliens coming over late at night....or the communists.

Seriously, it hasn't cropped up in the last few weeks. I was going to reflash the drive but I'm leaving it be for now.

I have the same problem and I have to say I'm not very happy after splashing out £50 EC8. MY copy of EC7 compressed my non-encrypted disks without problem. No matter what I've tried with EC8 - including selecting the single layer DVD-R/DVD+R option, EC8 always caches or tries to burn the disk uncompressed. I've used simple mode, advanced mode, creating an image in all formats trying to burn directly to DVD, nothing.

I'm obviously not the only person who's had this problem so what are Roxio going to do about it? Do I take my EC8 back to PC World and reinstall EC7 or go over to Nero?

Don't know the answer to any of your questions. I do know that this is a users' forum, not Roxio tech support. As for your last question, do whatever you want to do. Version 7.5 works best for me.

I have the exact same problem here. I get the bar at the bottom of the screen at it says the single layer disk but doies not work. I hit copy now and a window opens immediately and says finished. It has a scale from 0 to 100% but does not move or transcode anything! Seems strange as I have never had a problem with previous versions. Maybe they did take the compression out!!! Any advise appreciated but for now I am stuck with a bogus product and will load Version 7.5 back into my computer!!!

For some reason when I use RW discs, Disc Copy sets my Plextor to 8X for Power Record. This does not let transcode work. If I change the speed to 4X, it works fine. See what happens if you select another speed.

Depending on your version of 7 and definitely with 7.5, you should be able to compress with Disc Copier. Frist, burn your project as an ISO file (save to image) instead of a dvd folder. Double click the ISO file and Disc Copier should open. There have been times when I have to choose a slower burn speed to get compression to work but I've yet to figure out why that is.

Thanks for your reply. I do not have a problem doing what I want from within EMC 7.5, but I would like to find out if I can do the same from within EMC 8. After all when you spend the money that we do on a program you don't expect that good functions would not be removed from what has been billed as a far better product.

Thanks

Yes, you can do this with 8 ( I do) but if 7.5 works for you, you many not need to spend the money for 8 if you have no problems with what you have now.

Grandpa Dave - Compression in V8 depends on the disc size you choose. Once you select the 'source', you should get a bar at the bottom with the disc size. Selecting DVD-R/DVD+R which is single layer, 4.7 gig disc. Insert the blank disc. Let the software recognize it and click burn. Compression should be automatic. It works fine for me.

Gary: I will give this a try when I get home from the office. These old eyes of mine are not picking up on other things on the screen.

Thanks
