Dvd Remote Unable To Select Menu Items

richardinparadise

Question

I tried making DVDs using Windows Movie Maker and DVD maker but when I try to play the finished DVD on two different DVD players I am unable to select the on screen menu items and navigate to desired selections. The menu selection works fine when I play the DVD on my computer. The tech person I spoke with at the computer store said it was a problem with the windows software. He said that DVd's created with the windows software were only designed for use on computers. He recommended that I use Roxio instead. So I did. I recreated the Video in Roxio and am experiencing the same problem. I am recording onto DVD-R discs. My DVD players have no problems with all other professionally recorded DVD's.

Since you have given no information at all on how you created it is impossible to even guess what is going on.

Did you use myDVD (Create DVDs from the Roxio Home page) to burn your video to the DVD? If not then you did not create a DVD that plays on a DVD player and all you have may be a data DVD.

PLease tell us what you did, step by step and use the correct program names used.

I used Roxio Creator 2011 and Create DVD's. After I created the DVD I burned the DVD-R directly from Create DVD's. The video plays fine on my computer and on both of my DVD players. I am just not able to select and toggle the menu selections.

Still not much information. How did did you create the myDVD project, how did you create the menu? "I created the DVD" and "burned the DVD" tells us basically nothing. Step by step with specific name of functions is what is needed. to follow what you are doing.

I created and burned the video using Creator 2011 and Create DVD's. I followed the steps exactly as indicated in your instruction video. I imported the video files. The menu was automatically created, and as I added videos their titles were automatically added to the menu. I typed in the correct title to each of three menu page. When I clicked on the preview arrow in the lower right, the preview window opened with the sample remote on the left. I was able to click the arrows of the remote to select menu items and the video worked perfectly. I then burned the project to a DVD-R disk from within the program, following the instructions that came up when I clicked on the burn DVD button in the lower right of the screen. I used the default options when burning the DVD. The finished DVD plays fine on my computer and on both of my DVD players. The problem is that none of the menu options "highlights" on the TV screen when I play the DVD on my DVD players at work and at home, and the arrow buttons on my remote do not work with this DVD as they do will all other DVD's I play on these machines. If I use the "play" button on the DVD remote, I can get the video to play, and on one of the remotes I can skip from one scene to the other as they are playing. I have tried everything and done complete internet searches on this problem. It seems that no one else has ever had this problem.

I don't know why Roxio doesn't set up the default to have automatic activation on the button or text on the menu. I'm not sure that this is part of the issue you are having.

Did you remember to ste up activation as shown on these images?

For "Buttons"

HOw long in time is the video project? What quality setting are you using? If longer then 60 minutes and you used the Fit-to-disc option for quality, you can get the problems you described.

I tried everything, including talking to your tech support department by phone. Since the same problem occurs no matter which software I use to create the movie, the conclusion was that there was something wrong with my disk burner. So I checked the driver and firmware and made sure it was reinstalled and the latest version. that did not solve the problem. I also tried both DVD-r and DVD+r disks. The problem persists. I don't believe the problem is with the DVD player, since I tried the one at work and at home, both fairly recent models. Couldn't select menu options with either.

Only thing left to try is a new DVD burner.

Any other ideas?

I don't buy into the Burner excuse... :glare: As GPB pointed out, we don't work for Roxio but do have years of experience with the software

Get yourself a disc or 2 of DVD RW media (avoid Memorex).

With that, run a simple test: New DVD Project, accept defaults, change nothing!

Add One Picture.

Add another.

Continue till you have 4 then burn disc.

Repeat only this time add 3 Sub-menus (under Menu up top) then add 4 separate pictures to each of the sub menus and burn.

How does that work out?

I tried the DVD on a third DVD player and it worked just fine. What are the chances that the menu selections would work on only one out of three DVD players, expecially since the two players that did not work are relatively recent models. I'll try it on several more players and see what kind of pattern emerges.

Higher priced and more recent players are more finicky. Are you using good quality discs?
