D.v.d Freezes And Stops Burning At 97%

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS.

1) I am not using any registry cleaner. I checked on the free home user version of Avast! that is on my computer, and it does not change or protect the registry. It is the basic anti-virus. Anyway ... it never prevented me from installing Creator 2010 SE. So I can't see how it has affected my registry.

2) I WILL NOT USE FIT TO DISC IN THE FUTURE. Of course, this means that my recordings in HQ cannot be longer than about 69 minutes.

3) I like your suggestion that I do not try to burn a disc and an ISO at the same time. I will try to do one or the other alone and let you know what happens.

4) I am using Verbatim DVDs.

5) ESPECIALLY THANKS FOR THE SETTINGS RECOMMENDATIONS. I have just a couple of questions.

Can I alter the menu aspect ratio setting to 4:3 instead of using 16:9?

Can I alter the bitrate setting from 9mbs to something else -- perhaps 8mbs -- but how about as low as 6mb or 5mb?

Can I alter the audio settings -- like using a lower Bitrate or using something other than Dolby Digital?

THANKS AGAIN!!

4)

Yes, you can use the aspect ration you want. Most people now are working with digital camera and higer definition so that is what I showed.

I assume that you are asking about bit rate setting because you want to put more time (not file size) on a disc. Don't worry. if you create the image file and then burn that to a single sided disc using the application on the Home page, you will get close to 2 hours (not more) on a disc. The program will automatically fit it to the disc using the best bit rates that can be used and still have it fit.

If you set it yourself, it will probably not fit or will give you too much free space but if you like trial and error .... :o:P

Let us know if the 97% hang goes away.

What I did to get it working was to just make a image file and you can rename the image file to whatever you want before you start burning just don't change the disc volume label just leave that as (MyDVD) which it should be under disc volume label then burn the disc image to disc with a disc image copier hope that helps anyone

I experienced the same problem and installing and uninstalling did not solve the problem. After much trial and error, it was narrowed down to burner interfering with McAfee software. This is how I resolve the issue:

Before clicking the MY DVD, restart the computer. As the computer initializes, open the MY DVD program before the McAfee icon shows up in the toolbar at the right hand corner on the screen, that is load MY DVD before McAfee loads fully. McAfee icon will show up eventually but that will be alright. Proceed as normal with burner setup and your DVD will be burned successfully[Windows XP, Dell 8400].

That really sounds pretty far fetched... It really does not matter when startup items are loaded and services started. If it was going to interfere, it will regardless of When it starts

But if that is working for you, Great!

I want to update my experience and thank everyone for helping me.

First, the most serious concern I had was with MYDVD, when attempting to burn a DVD -- some sort of conflict, after reaching 97% of the process, where Windows 7 opened a warning box stating that "VIDEOWAVE HAS STOPPED WORKING AND NEEDS TO SHUT DOWN". And then MYDVD shut down.

This problem is clearly solved by NOT BURNING TO A DVD. Instead, from now on, I am using MYDVD to burn to an ISO file. Then, after checking that the ISO file works, I burn that image to a DVD using VIDEO COPY AND CONVERT.

Thank you all for solving this pressing issue for me. I hope others will be satisfied.

Second, my other issues, I believe, were never issues that affected the 97% SHUTDOWN PROBLEM. It made no difference if I used MYDVD to create a DVD using menus or no menus -- and it seems to not matter whether I trimmed or edited the video. The only issue is that I need to burn to an ISO first, and not use MYDVD to burn to a disc.

Finally, I found it best to follow your other excellent suggestion: always capture video with the best HQ setting. And then burn the DVD with the best HQ setting as well in order to get the best quality.

Thanks y'all

I think most things were answered...

You can do some interesting things with Menus...

For example on the first menu of a Vacation video you could have 2 buttons…

A Play All and another Select.

If Select is chosen it takes you to a sub-menu where you have your clips set up by Location or Date or Subject or…

That is where your creativity comes to play.

Go through the How To’s for all versions to get ideas.

Use DVD RWs to test with.

Make up short tests, I use single still pictures to stand in place of video clips just to check out menu function to make sure it will work the way I want it to. Always do this before you invest hours and days painting yourself into a corner!

KEEP NOTES!

First thank you Jim_Hardin for clarifying that the aspect ratio only affects the MENUS and not my video file. Good to know.

Second thank you again (and again) to sknis for your help. So far, it is working very well because:

1) first I use MEDIA CAPTURE to record (capture) my original home video movie -- recording it at the quality setting of HQ, and limiting the time to about 66 minutes, but I also tried one recording with 84 minutes. I understand that the default HQ setting records at a bitrate of 8 Mbps.

2) second, I used MYDVD to burn an ISO. I did not use FIT TO DISC. Instead I used the default HQ setting, which is at 9 Mbps. I was successful three times. One time I used no menus and no chapters. Twice I used no menus, but used chapters. AND one time I adjusted the MYDVD project settings to CUSTOM settings of 720x480 and a 6.85 Mbps bitrate so that I could fit 84 min on one disc, with just about 1 minute remaining. And I was successful. I did not really use trial and error to calculate the 6.85 Mbps bitrate. I guessed at 7 Mbps and then saw that the time line indicator in MYDVD was indicating that I had gone over by a couple of minutes, then I went down from 7 Mbps until I found a bitrate that fit. And to my great joy, the ISO was successful. I tested it out in VLC media player first.

3) Then I burned the ISO to my Verbatim DVD disc with no problem.

Conclusion. I need to not use MYDVD to burn directly to a disc. Burn to an ISO first.

Future attempts:

1) Currently I am only using MYDVD with NO MENUS, but using chapters. I am also no trimming anything. And I am not otherwise editing the video using MYDVD (and I assume the Videowave program that operates to edit the video while using MYDVD). Next effort will be to use a menu or two. I used to use MENUS all the time with my earlier versions of CREATOR.

2) I will also attempt trimming and editing in MYDVD - and then burn to an ISO

3) I will also attempt taking two captured videos - one 55 min. and one 45 min. - and use MYDVD to combine them into a single 100 minute video using the editing process. An alternative is to use MYDVD with one submenu for one video and another submenu for the other one. And then I will have to burn the ISO at a bitrate that will accommodate the new 100 minute DVD - I suspect that it will be around 6 Mbps bitrate.

FINAL QUESTION - This time about MEDIA CAPTURE (aka Roxio Media Import) and not MYDVD.

I have been using the HQ setting in Media Capture because it does provide the best quality. But I noticed that the recording is 720 x 480 MPEG-2 with an 8Mbps bitrate and the video format is at. On the other hand, recording (importing) at DVD SP is 352x480, MPEG-2, 4 Mbps. And, although this might produce a file small enough to allow burning about 2 hours of video to one DVD, it is significantly lower quality compared to DVD HQ.

I know that I can simply use VIDEOWAVE to take a 90 minute HQ, 8 Mbps video and convert it to a 90 minute video with a 6 Mbps bitrate, which would fit on to a single DVD easily. And I used to use VIDEOWAVE that way in my earlier versions of CREATOR. Indeed, I have a chart somewhere showing me the time limit (or file size) that would fit on a single DVD when I used a 4 Mbps, or 5 Mbps or 6 Mbps, etc bitrate.

But CREATOR 2009 SPECIAL EDITION allowed me to use MYDVD to FIT TO DISC - which allowed me to use MEDIA CAPTURE to record at the best HQ level - and then just use FIT TO DISC with MYDVD. Simple.

NOW, however, it seems that I cannot use FIT TO DISC with my new CREATOR 2011 SPECIAL EDITION - because of the problems I have been encountering.

SO my question is this - is there a way to adjust the Capture Settings in MEDIA CAPTURE so that I can have more choices than DVD HQ, DVD SP, DVD LP, etc?

I suppose the easy answer is NO - but I figure it doesn't hurt to ask.

THANKS AGAIN and I will keep you informed

MYRON SCHRECK

There is much too much information in your post to answer or comment on. So I will just comment on a couple of things.

First of all, always capture to best quality available. You can easily degrade the quality by using lower settings when burning but you can never do the reverse, ie. if you capture at a SP setting you cannot get back the HQ quality even if you select the HQ quality when burning. I never bother with changing any of the bitrates but always burn to the default HQ setting. If the video is longer then 60 minutes I split it over 2 videos and keep the best quality possible.

Most of us prefer to use myDVD to burn to an iso file and then use Burn Image to Disc to burn the iso file to a DVD.

C2011 allows you to use Fit-to-Disc but it will give you the poorest quality if your video is over 60 minutes long.

I don't know why you want to create sub-menus when you only have 2 videos. You simply add a video and it creates a menu item on the menu page. There is no reason to fool around with sub-menus.

I have no idea what you are asking here: "SO my question is this - is there a way to adjust the Capture Settings in MEDIA CAPTURE so that I can have more choices than DVD HQ, DVD SP, DVD LP, etc?" You should always capture in the best quality possible which is HQ.

That is a lot of information and right now I don't have time to read it all.

Do not think about file size. It is meaningless when it comes to home burned video. Remember that you can get up to one hours of best quality video on a standard single sided DVD. You can get close to two hours with 1) a dual layer DVD or 2 ) poor quality video. You might be able to get a little more (a couple of minutes) if you encode (burn) to a folder set and then copy the folder set to a DVD.

At this point, you are trying to be too analytical. Let the program do the work.

I'm not sure what you mean by having a DVD with two menus.

Perhaps someone else has a better answer.

I'm not going to respond to all of thaat. Registry cleaners are notorious for deleting needed Roxio registry items. If you have one that is stand alone or part of Avast, then turn it off.

Are you adding music to your productions or just using the native audio?

1) do not use registry cleaners.

2) Do not use fit to disc.

3) Do not burn an image file (ISO) and burn to disc at the same time. Burn the image files and then use the application on the home page or VideoCopy and Convert to burn the image file to the disc.

4) Always use good quality discs (Verbatim or JVC (Taiyo Yuden).

5) Try the settings below:

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS.

1) I am not using any registry cleaner. I checked on the free home user version of Avast! that is on my computer, and it does not change or protect the registry. It is the basic anti-virus. I have been having the SAME problems as others -- and I have been performing the same actions to fix the problem that have been recommended.

Using MYDVD, I get to 97% and MYDVD crashes with a notice that "Videowave has stopped working" -- although sometimes I get it to work, but generally only after running REPAIR.

Also, I always BOTH burn and create an ISO. After a crash, the ISO is junk. I have been using computers for over 20 years and I have been using ROXIO CREATOR, in its various versions, for many years. I have earlier versions on my other laptop and my desktop that work fine, and I have had never encountered this frustrating dilemma.

I understand that my anti-virus program might be hanging things up. I use AVAST!. But I have the same failures when I disable both my internet connection and my anti-virus program.

I was successful in burning a couple of DVD's when I reinstalled my DISC (of course, uninstalling everything first and disabling my anti-virus), but I DID NOT INSTALL the online SP1 update. Still there were a few failures. And yesterday, Videowave started failing all the time. So I decided to install the SP1 update. NO JOY! MYDVD still consistently fails to create a DVD and I keep getting the notice that "Videowave has stopped working". So - once again - I plan to UNINSTALL everything and reinstall ONLY the Creator 2011 disk and not the SP1 update. I suspect that MyDVD might allow me to create a couple of DVDs before it starts to fail again. That has been the pattern for nearly two weeks now.

I wish the problem would be consistent and re-creatable so I could try to isolate it and work on a solution. But the problem is inconsistent. Sometimes I am successful and sometimes I fail. And it can be with the same video project, but a different time. And it can work or not work whether I try it without chapters or with chapters -- or with menus or without menus -- or using "fit to disc" or "same as original" or "HQ quality" (when obviously my HQ video will fit).

I have tried avoiding the use of Videowave by only trying to burn discs that can be burned with MyDVD as "same as original" or that do not need any changes when "fit to disc" is selected. But the failure is still inconsistent - and there is no recurring theme -- there is no one way to be sure of it not failing.

Most of the time I use MyDVD by selecting NO MENUS - and just burning one 63 minute video - and not even using chapters. But that does not assure me of success - and so I go back to using chapters and sometimes that will work.

One time I could not get two different 60 minute videos to burn using MyDVD - even tho I tried four times. But then I tried burning them both in MyDVD on the same project, by editing the video and putting one video next to the other. To my complete surprise, I was successful. It took nearly three hours for the process to complete, but Videowave did not fail, which I consider a miracle up there with parting the Red Sea.

BUT - BECAUSE it takes hours to "fit to disc" the video programs that are longer than 70 minutes - and that require re-encoding -- I have preferred to only try to make MyDVD work by using video programs that are under 65 minutes. THAT WAY, it takes only ten minutes on my computer to get to the point of 97% completion -- when "record menus" is attempted -- and when the VIDEOWAVE FAILURE occurs. That way, I can save time and find out if "Videowave has stopped working" without spending hours to get to the failure point.

Anyway: here are the details on my computer.

Manufacturer & Model: Toshiba Qosmio X500

Processor: Intel Core i7 CPU Q720 @ 1.60GHz

Installed Memory: 8.00 GB RAM

System type: 64-bit operating system - ACPI x64 based PC

Windows edition: Windows 7 Professional

Devices:

Bluetooth

Hitachi disk drive

NVIDIA GeForce GTS 360M Display adapter

Matshita BD-MB DVD/CD-ROM drive

Intel 5 Series 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller

Network adapters:

ATheros AR8131 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller

Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter

Realtek RTL8191SE Wirel;ess LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC

Sound, video and game controllers

Conexant Pebble High Definition SmartAudio

NVIDIA High Definition Audio

Roxio Video Capture USB

USB 2861 Device

Storage controllers

O2Micro Integrated MMC/SD controller

O2Micro Integrated MS/MSPRO/xD controller

System Devices: too many to enumerator

I HOPE THAT EVERYTHING WORKS OUT FOR ALL OF US SUFFERING FROM THIS PROBLEM. ULTIMATELY, I MIGHT UNINSTALL CREATOR 2011 AND GO BACK TO SOME EARLIER VERSION THAT I PURCHASED YEARS AGO.

thanks for all your help

Frustration 2 ! :angry2:B)

LOook at my post above - Do you see the text

" Make sure that you burn to an ISo (image file) and not directly to disc. Use the application on the Home page to burn the ISo to the disc after it completes.

Did you see that? Do you plan to do anything about it? What is your native language? Perhaps we can do a better translation or perhaps you can get better help on the German forums?

Don't use fit to disc but that still may not fix the issue. What about the other quesstions I asked (menu, burn directly to disc)?

Make sure that you burn to an ISo (image file) and not directly to disc. Use the applicationon the Home page to burn the ISo to the disc after it compltes.

 Please take the time to read and understand and answer someone's relpy to your question. It is very frustrating to have to pull information from you. If you really want help, then take the time. I took the time to write the response so PLEASE take the time to read it and answer the questions !

Are you using a standard menu page or one that you modified for this DVD? Typically that is the last thing to be encoded. You can easily put 54 minutes on a standard single layer DVD with no problems. Have you selected HQ rather than fit to disc at the lower right corner of Create DVD page? Are you trying to burn directly to a DVD or are you encoding (burning ) to an image file or folder set?
