Program Hangs

NewFilmMaker

Question

Hi,

my Roxio creator 2010, when editing a long project with videowave 12 at any moment but most often when clicking an object on the viewer screen, the program hangs, releases all memory and disappears from the memory without any trace nor error messages.

But I have found in the event log - application this message at the tjme the program hangs :

' The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( RoxMediaDB12 ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Service stopped.'

If I understand correctly, some special request as stopped the RoxMediaDB12 that could have stopped or helped in hanging the Videowave12.exe??? Could it be? Or visa-versa?

Do you think that I will need to reinstall Roxio Creator 2010 to solve this problem?

The only thing I did recently was to upgrade my NVIDIA driver from Aug/2010 to updated release Jan/2011.

My system is :

Computer : Intel Pentium-4 : 3.40GHz

3.41 Ghz 3.00 Go memory RAM

OS : Windows-XP Prof , 32 bit SP-3

Video card : NVIDIA GeForce 6600GT – 128 Mb

Driver 266.58 Video Bios 5.43.02.16.00

Disk : C: 150 Gb

Disk Server : 1Tb

Software: Roxio Creator 2010 SP2

DirectX 9.0b (4.09.0000.0902)

OK your the second one telling me that it should not work with a disk data server. It is odd but if you guy say so... Too bad I'll have to find a bigger system disk to hold all my data and start over my project. All my data files holds on 600Gb I have 35 Gb available on my system disk. This project has more than 600 images. I will need to reassign all the images coming out of my V:...disk to reassign them to c:... disk. Do you have any utility program to rename all files location from location A to B in your .dmsm or dat files.

:P... Aie! I just found out that this dsms file is an XML file, can I just rename my files from V: to C:? After this I could see if the problem is still there.

Meanwhyle I would have like to know why my system stops and hangs when I click on a text object???? So you say it is because my images are on the NAS...? Usually when an error occurs we should get an error message, the way thing goes it is like if the message file or program thats should list this error does'nt exist or is having a problem displaying the error. Can this by right? I tried reinstalling the SP2 but I need to uninstalled it before and this, I am not ready to do at this stage.

So if you have any other comment please feel free to say.

I'll be back :ninja:

A project with 600 images only allows 6 seconds per image when you are creating a standard, 4.7GB DVD at the HQ quality setting. Such a DVD can onlu hold 60 minutes of video. How long in time is your project?

There is no need to copy all your images on your NAS drive to your system drive. Just create a folder and put all the source files your project uses into that folder. You of course keep the original image files on the NAS drive)You can try to rename the files in the dmsm files but you have to make sure that the full path is renamed not just the file names. Another (and better) method is to first copy the source files to a new folder on your system drive. Then rename the folder on the NAS drive (temporarily) to something else. Now launch the dmsm file and it should show all your files as "missing". You can now reset the location of the missing files to your new folder.

35GB free is not very much especially if your drive is very fragmented.

This will probably be my last post...

To answer your question, it fail at the 3 min. 10sec. mark of the project in hardware mode thats is. So it is probably because of the weight of this scene. I do have a lot of transition or fade-in fade-out before this 3 min. mark. But I will downgrade by project to a simple project and forget about complicating things.

OK now here is what I did...

A- Transfer all the project (all that was posted on my NAS) to my C: local disk.

B- Rereferenced all my images... took a while.

C- Save this new project under a new name for good sake.

D- Went in and changed a couple of things like splitting a scene in half ( the scene that had 10 overlays images and texts)

E- I saved the project once the scene was splitted. All OK

F- Then I tried to adjust certain images and texts (like centering, aligment, displacement, etc) it hanged with the error I have already send you

G- What I did next was to do just one or two adjustments at a time, really slow and saved to project. When OK

H- I did this at least 4 times, it hanged 2 times but finally when thru all the corrections I needed to do in 4 saving steps. Take at least 25 min to save every time.

I- Now I finally have a project the way I want it to be. So at this stage I do have a project at my taste.

My next steps today will be to try in procucing a mpeg best quality (hardware or software) and see the results

A- Will it hang

B- Will I be missing any images.

We will see.

Thank you again to all you guys. That's the best I can do for now. If it does the same problem then I will change machine or uninstall my Roxio and reinstall it. I really don't know??? :(

On the joking side I might do like Jim suggested and wait for pure luck to fix my problem.

For now I did all you have asked. So will see...

Thanks again Myguggy and Sknis

Success or not

I'll be back ! :ninja:

OK I have no more system hanging. What I did was to reduce the size of my project and generated intermediate mpeg. These smaller files seem to do the job and I dont have any more system hangs.

Thanks all for the help.

By the way, all images comes from my file server and I do not have any more system hanging. So I can confirm that my system work well with my file server as some had doubts B)

I am sorry but my French is not good enough to understand the first post. The other messages are really to generic to mean anything.

There are a couple things to try.

1-Remove all transitions and effects if you have any

2-Slowly build up your project by adding only a few items at a time.

Is the failure at the 3 minute mark in the project or after 3 minutes of rendering. If in the project then that is an indication that there is a problem with your sources at that point.

Thats OK.

The last thing I tried was to export to an mpeg the same way you are suggesting. In the total 55 min. project in hardware mode I had an out of memory after 3m10sec. In the software mode I had missing images but it did render up to the end.

Now I transfered everything onto my local disk by disabling my NAS. I had to reassign all my images that I had copy into my C: local disk when I loaded the project. I modify a couple of images location by clicking and moving the image and text then when I tried modifiyng an other image by clicking on it, there was a wait (halte), and then a error message click OK and an other message. I am sending you as attachement Error_1 and Error_2. This images was really on the disk at the location specified by the property information of this image.

I went and look at the event application log and I have a stop RoxMediaDB12.exe. Now I don't know who came first the stop Videowave12.exe or RoxMediaDB12.

I have a feeling that I will have to restart this project completely or uninstall and reinstall Roxio Creator. This is a virtual pure fonction call and usually means an error in a .dll or unregistered .dll. I'm not sure?

It look like now I have 2 problems : one ine the editing of the project and the other in missing images in the final product. Could both be caused by a same situation? Dll or system malfunction?

I am not going to go back and read all the posts again but I have a question for you: Have your tried to burn to in image (iso) file, then burn the iso file to DVD or are you always burning directly to DVD?

Many of us prefer the 2 step method since it seems to give better results.

Another thing to try: in Videowave Output to a DVD mpeg file, best quality. THen use myDVD and the mpg file to create the DVD.

Thats OK.

Thanks for the hints. Thats what I was going to do. I'm still puzzled why it's only on this project I am getting this problem. I know it's probably something that I did... but what I don't know.

I need to find the problem for futur projects.

So let's go and do it.:( I'll do what you just afvised and transafer the data for this project on my local disk.

Thanks again for the good help.

Define "a long project"???

You mentioned 50 minutes in post #3 and I have run Projects exceeding 8 hours without a crash.

Are you creating these in the VideoWave program (Edit Video-Advanced).

What are they consisting of?

If you can Paint me a Picture I will be glad to attempt to run one across my network and use the slowest PC and HDD I own  I don't even list that one anymore ;)

I'm not comparing any of your big projects with mine. Looks like (from reading your reply) that I have a very small project of 55 min on regular DVD that I'm unable to burn because I'm missing images and cannot completely edit because I have a system that hangs. Thats all...:(

But your are not helping at all, nor are constructive.

So I'm doing my best with the other helping people that reply with some good hints.

...And yes I am creating this project edit-video advance and burning in MyDVD

2 experienced users here have suggest you TRY something!

You choose to ignore us and dismiss it.

Luck is about all you have left…

Jim i am not ignoring you guy s. It's only that I know that it is not because of the NAS that it is not working. There something else that I cannot see for know. So I will transfert all my data to my local disk and will probably discover the real reason and then come back to my NAS once the problem/solution is found.

Good luck to you!

Hi, I dont wanna be rude with you Jim, your probably a good guy, but it's not luck that I need just a bit of support from a specialist like you. I'll tell you all I know and together we should be able to succeed. If I had the solution on hand I would be working with you guy's. :D

Of course the transfer speed can effect the burn. If the transfer from your network drive gets interrupted you can have another bad burn. I don't think that C2011 (or any other Roxio video product) works reliably over a network if it works at all. I always have my source files on the local drive or at least on a USB drive.

Perhaps you should TRY what is being suggested instead of dismissing it...

It usually works better when you don't try to outthink the answers

Yea if I have to try all the knowsense people say sometime I would really be wasting my time. We need to fillter infomration.

OK!... about my hanging problem, I just found out yesterday that it hangs when I click on an text object and the parameter dialog box that usually is displayed for this type of object, doens'nt.

Let me speak to sknis or myguggi at least i'm getting usefull information out of them and I progess more in solving my problem. You have any usefull information to add to there comments.

Like we say when it work dont play with it. It always did work on my NAS. I have 320 Gb on this NAS it won't fit on my system disk. So this transfer should be my last choice and only if I need to do so. For now I need to know why my system stops when I click on a text object???? So you say it is because my images are on the NAS...? Let me have a doute.

Anybody else can confirm his saying???

Hi sknis,

just to let you know that this is not my first project that I produce in this matter. My 3 first projects where with Roxio Creator 2009. I has problem burning but if I started with a brand new rebooted system all was OK.

Now with the Creator 2010, up until now l had the feeling that all working a lot better tahn 2009. I made 4 big 50 minutes projects with 2010 last summer all was OK. Now this last one is giving me problems that I cannot seem to overcome.

All my source data, jpg, mts video files are on my disk server and always have. Only the saved project and music is on my C: local disk and the installed Roxio Creator 2010.

The application run on my PC with all the installation programs, it is only that when I fetch images or video they are coming out of my T: 1Tb disk server. I dont see any difference it should all be transparent to the application? But yes you could say the transfer speed would'nt be the same, can this have any impact and cause the problem?

The problem may well be the disc servier since no Roxio program runs on a network. The images, music, etc has to be on your system disc or on a USb connected hard drive.

If you get it to run, please let us know.
