Convert Vhs To Dvd

cwil

Question

I just purchased from Costco Roxio Creator Special Edition 2011. Version is 1.3.166. With it was bundled Convert VHS to DVD which has a build number of 201B2A,C13. I have reviewed the getting started guide. In looking at pages 9 & 10 it gives instructions on settings. When I open up the Roxio Easy VHS to DVD I get two options, one is record dvd the other is record, edit and save. When I open up either of these neither one looks like the instructions in the guide. I tried both options and both seemed to work. After I set the time for 15 min and at the end of 15 the recording stopped. I then pressed the white button at the bottom right and it said finalizing for a long period of time then said recording complete. Forgot to mention that I had selected and checked for a title and entered in what I wanted it. When done I put in dvd to play back and got the title page with the text and music I guess that goes with it to play all the way thru and then start all over. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Also, if using the 2011 Creator will do the job let me know which program to select and any guidance you can provide will be greatly appreciated. I really had high hopes, and still do as I want to convert about 20 vhs tapes from the days my grandkids played sports to preserve them on DVD as well as they who are now in College are asking for copies. Please Help with any detail instructions you can. Thanks

If it came with Creator 2011 I wouldn’t even bother to install the V2D disc! :o

V2D is but a tiny fraction of what you can do with Creator 2011 Suite!!!

If you look through here as well as the ‘How To’s’ for the other versions starting around Creator 2009, you will find a wealth of info about capture as well as the Creator products.

Hope to see you up in the Creator 2011 Forums ;)

Thanks Jim

I may now be in wrong category but will followup with you based on your response. I think you meant forgot the bonus convert vhs to dvd that came with the program I purchased at Costco and use Creator. I went to Creator and captured my video just fine and then went to my file and it plays ok on the computer. I then tried to figure out which of the categories I should select to burn the file to a dvd so I could play it on a DVD player. The only way I could figure out how to get it burned was I used Create DVD then selected DVD and then went to menu on left and selected add new movie and navigated to the captured video I just made and burned it. Once burned I played it back on the computer and the actual movie came out within the menu box with the blue background and music. I then tried on a DVD player and it worked ok, although a little shaky.

Did I do correctly or is their a better way. And if so please please help me with steps to complete such as.

1. Capture

2. Use ------------------- to create etc and any other steps I need to know.

Thanks for helping me Jim

The actual movie does not play within the menu box. You have to click on the menu item and then it plays full screen - just like real DVDs

Thanks, I did try again and clicked and yes it worked. My main question now is did I do things correctly or if not can you give me steps and which programs to open in the correct order. For now I assume using the capture was correct. After that anything I have done is trial and error. I can figure out details I just need to know what to use in what order. Please Help.

Can someone at least tell me which application within Creator to use to convert the vhs tapes to dvd.

Maybe you could help me out here cwil…

I have never seen inside the box of the Creator 20xx Special Edition! A couple of users have implied that there is a disc of Creator 2011 and another disc containing either Drivers for the Device or the whole VHS to DVD Software???

What is actually printed on the 2 discs in the box?

Now to your questions…

In 2011, use Capture Video:

You can also use CinePlayer to play the captured files or VideoWave to do edits etc.

Lastly MyDVD is your Authoring program to burn a DVD Movie with.

Here is a link to a 'How To' on USB Capture. Skip the Driver stuff, that is automatic in Creator 2011 ;)

Thanks so much Jim for you help. Am I correct to assume that My DVD for burning purposes you mentioned is the same as Create a DVD on your illustration of the first screen you show of all of the various programs. That is the exact screen I get when I open up my program. I understand the capture and play functions and have no problems capturing. I am attaching a copy of the box and the disk that came in my program I purchased from Costco. However, I only had one disk which a copy is with the box in the picture. I did get the same USB cables that you show also. I have my Roxio Creator Icon that I use to open the program that shows all of the sub programs. Once I installed that USB I then as I remember got the icon which is separate from the Creator one for the Convert VHS to DVD one which looks like a VHS tape over a DVD. I am attaching both the pic of the box and disk together and the screen from the Convert VHS to DVD. If you have any additional comments let me know and again thanks for you assistance.

Wow, 4 pair of 3D glasses!!! :o

I only got 1 pair…

It appears that the disc has both programs on it… Strange but then Roxio has done strange things before

Yes you are correct MyDVD is launched by clicking the ‘Create DVDs’ button. They used to list the programs by their names but starting in 2009 they went to the Dumbed Down interface

You nailed it about the V2D program, and it should show up in your Control Panel – Programs and Features as well:

Thanks for the pic, I am going to steal it for my collection ;)

Jim,

1. I successfully completed 3 1?2 hours of conversion from VHS to DVD's. Seems to me like I read somewhere, but can't find it that two hours should be max. I split and did the conversion of the VHS into two tapes of 1 hour an 45 min each. What is the max time to use?

2. Basically, I captured 1:45 then stopped capture and the VHS. However, after each capture I was unable to shut the program down. The little circle keep spinning. I even went to ctnl alt del and applications and hit end program and that did not work so I finally turned the power off and restarted. Once restarting I selected start normally and it did so I opened the program up and did the second 1:45 min capture. Both of them captured fine.

3. From start to finish, that is capturing two 1:45 min projects, then making dvd for both took me about 4 1/2 hours but both disk work fine in a VHS player. Does that seem about right?

4. Finally, I used the copy feature to copy each disk. Once it created the temp file and asked for blank disk it got to 75% then spit the disk out with an error message that said Their was a problem with burning the disk and to put in blank disk and hit retry. Initially it took about 40 min just to get to the creating blank disk and then burning 75% before the error message. I did put in a new blank disk and hit retry and it only took about 10 min or so to burn but it burned ok. I am now about to burn second disk and assume will work ok. If not, I will let you know tomorrow.

Any feedback about my above facts and or suggestions is appreciated.

It may have taken me this long to do the 3:45 but the final product is worth its wait in gold.

Capture: Many users recommend doing captures in smaller chunks, then piecing the ‘chunks’ back together.

I do not… My PC allows me to capture full length and work with that size of file.

Either way is fine, as long as it works!

Output: All experienced users will say the same thing. One Hour per DVD!

More than that and you sacrifice Video Quality for time. I mostly use DL discs these days which can hold 2 hours.

I have one last comment re this project. As I had said earlier when I was burning Disk 1 it came back after 75% and got message that their was a problem burning and asked to put in new disk and select retry and it did.

After doing number 2 disk and the actual burn started it got to a certain point and error message came up unable to read the disk and check for fingerprints and mentioned about some disks are protected, etc. I am using the same dvd new disk as in prior burns . Also, the disk I was copying was the one I just created using capture and create DVD. Any ideas!

Completely different problem, often from cheap media…

Since you are not really using the V2D software, or shouldn’t be, that is a discussion for the Creator 2011 area.

Will need a lot more detail when you post it! The specific programs names involved (easy, look at the Title bar at the top of the program) and the settings you are using.

Media and your PC specs.

See you at the top of the heap
