Toast Quits When Opening Mkv Files

99trouble

Question

Hello,

I have not been able to use Toast 11. It quits unexpectedly when dropping or opening mkv files. I get the beach ball spin for 5 seconds and then Toast quits. I have run the upgrade to 11.0.1 and have the bluray plugin installed. I have reinstalled application, restarted, fixed disk permissions (all the black magic).

Here is a console log. It looks like something is wrong with the library?

imac, 2 Ghz core 2 duo, 4 gig ram, osx 10.5.8

Any ideas? Thanks, Eric

Check your email when you can, I need to get a piece or copy of that file, and if possible the entire crash report.

Thanks

Sorry for the delay. Have been working out of town. The files are large, so I can't email them. I did send you a crash log last week 4/23.

Thanks Again.

Quick, someone call a wambulance !

Seriously, I also encountered the problem ; Toast crashes at some point in the encoding process. Tried to convert the video to another format (with another software) but then I loose the subtitles. Mkv is a great format, it's so bad that it isn't more mainstream.

Good luck fixing that issue.

BTW : does anyone knows a good mkv utility ?

From what I've read and what I've seen with a couple MKV videos furnished to me, the first couple versions of Toast 11 had a lot of trouble with MKV video. The latest version only has a problem with a few MKV videos. Sorry, but I don't know why some work and some aren't working. All I can do is confirm that it seems to be hit or miss.

I am running a new high end mac pro with 18gb of memory and when i add multiple large mkv files to Toast 11, the hour glass, show processing and then about about 2 minutes Toast goes into beach ball and application not responding, When I add the files one at a time the very large file take a little while, as it does the conversion but it does not crash and the smaller mkv files do not take that long.

It almost looks like Toast or another part of the OS is choking on all of the data during the conversion and loading of image files into Toast 11.

After admitting that I wasted $100 and countless hours on this POS program, I have not even opened it in a month. Today I figured, what the hell, let's see if there are any updates. So I updated to 11.0.3 and the problem persists. At least I was able to fill out a survey on this abomination for Survey Monkey.

Can anyone with this issue please try the 11.0.3 beta and reply in that thread if it is still crashing for them when adding an MKV file?

I am having the same problems as before. 11.0.3 beta has not helped. Still getting a crash and program unexpectedly quits.

Thanks for the reply. Toast 11 does not even open the file. Unfortunately the issue is a crash. The program quits. The console reports the following:

I have found both Toast 10 and 11 to be very slow in dealing with MKV files, so slow as to leave me uncertain whether anything is actually happening. What I usually do is convert the MKV to DV or some other format and then feed it to Toast.

Thanks for the try. My problem is opening or dragging a .mkv file to toast. I get a spinning wheel and the program (toast) quits. I can't get to the conversion process or anything. The console log says toast quits due to a segmentation error. Apparently that has to do with retrieving from memory. I ran disk warrior and tech tools to rebuild the hd directory and test the ram. All is good there, but still experiencing the same problem.

A few more trouble tickets and if no resolve, I will move on. Too much wasted time already.

Thanks again for your help.

I haven't had your issue. It also turns out that my stall at the start of conversion was due to the Turbo264 HD being plugged into a USB port that is having some problems, so that was an issue solely on my Mac. The distortion of the converted video is because of the source, possibly because it is 25 fps and interlaced. That shouldn't be a problem but it turns out to be. I did tests with MKVs created by Toast and they converted without difficulty except there is no video when previewing them in the Toast media browser. So I can't guess why Toast is unable to load your MKV videos. It opens mine although they are certainly shorter than yours.

Sorry for the delay in doing the test. I downloaded a 2-minute MKV HD interlaced video file. The video appears in the convert window. When I tried exporting to the AppleTV setting the convert window stayed at 1% and never wrote anything to the hard drive. I successfully cancelled the conversion and changed to the DivXHD setting. That conversion proceeded to the end but was very, very slow (7 minutes for a less than 2-minute clip) and looked horrible. I don't know how much of the problem is due to the sample I'm using or to Toast. But it doesn't look promising.

Three trouble tickets later, this problem still persists. I have tried reinstalling toast, upgrading to toast 11.0.2, and upgrading system to os 10.6.3. Last trouble ticket I sent my system profile info. I would send crash logs if that would help.

I have purchased and used toast 5 and 8 and was pleased with the product. I am not happy now.

To add insult to injury, I bought the physical cd for an extra $17 from digital river. It will not mount due to i/o errors. This is the case when used in two different optical drives. $100 and something dollars wasted.

I'll try to locate a mkv video so I can check it out on my system.

I had a similar result when trying to add a VIDEO_TS folder located on an external hard drive. As a test, copy your mkv file to the startup hard drive and then drag that to Toast. I'm wondering if the problem is a failure with Toast 11 to read video from external devices rather than a problem reading the mkv videos.
