Screen Output When Editing

When editing my video in advanced I have what seems to be a poor quality output on the editing area. It is made up of black and white lines. Occasionally the video quality jumps back to a colour look but then jumps back again. this usually happens when I'm initiating a change in something. Any ideas? Is this a way the programme deals with rendering?

A 'Cake' doesn't look too pretty while it is in the mixing bowl
