rxfix.exe didn't help (didn't hurt anything that I could see, either)

WinXP Device Manager reports the drive as _NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A

Maybe I should try a DVD+R (which I don't have laying around at the moment) and not a DVD-R

That's the message that I get when I put a blank DVD-R in the drive.

The drive can read and write CDs just fine, and it also plays DVDs fine also.

It's a NEC ND-1100A

??????? time for a new drive?

While firmware may help if you run into other problems, you cannot burn to DVD-R or DVD-RW discs. That drive only will write (burn) to DVD+R or DVD+RW discs.

Thanks Larry, I completely missed that one. A simple check would have been easy but I went right by it. Good catch.

Thanks Paul. Not sure why it occured to me so late last night either, but something about that drive rang a bell, so I jumped over to the videohelp.com site and looked it up. A lot of usefull info on that site for the OP if they are interested.
