Why Was Google Chrome Installed?

User Not Found

Question

Why did your installer not test for an existing version of Google Chrome? :angry2:

Why did your application install Google Chrome?

The most recent version of Google Chrome was already installed.

Why did you install Google Chrome in Administrator Mode? :angry2:

It was already installed as a Standard user account for security purposes.

Why did you make Google Chrome my default browser? :angry2:

As a web developer I don't uses a default browser since I choose which browser I wish to use.

This message was displayed:

"An administrator has installed Google Chrome on this system, and it is available for all users. The system-level Google Chrome will replace your user-level installation now."

Why was I not given the option to decline the installation of Google Chrome?

Have you folks ever seen a "Custom" versus "Default" installation?

How do I install Roxio Easy VHS to DVD without Google Chrome?

How do I install Roxio Easy VHS to DVD without Google Chrome?

It is not our installer since we are just users of the software. Why don't you ask Roxio this question?

As far as I know every version of Roxio programs gives the option of installing or not installing Google Chrome. You must have ignored that option

Thank you for posting so quickly. I'm sorry; I should have said the Roxio installer. I had just cut and pasted part of the questions I had asked in the trouble ticket that I had opened prior to posting here.

The DVD that came with my "Roxio Easy VHS to DVD" has on the obverse near the hub "Made in the USA" and "160495-04UN" (Installation Disc Program & Content). The reverse of the DVD near the hub is labeled "DRSS-1936920A1", "1", and "A01".

Using this DVD to install "Roxio Easy VHS to DVD" it did not provide an option for the installation of Google Chrome, it just installed it. The installer did not check to see if Google Chrome was installed or that there was a more recent version of it on the system.

I use Acronis True Image Home 2011 for backing up (complete disk images), so I just restored my system to just prior to the installation of "Roxio Easy VHS to DVD". I then verified that Windows 7 SP1 was up to date and Google Chrome was up to date.

I then installed "Roxio Easy VHS to DVD", this time I took Screen Shots of the entire Installation (72 pages (11,924 Kb)) and it does not have an option for Google Chrome; it just installs it, and then makes it your "Default Browser".

In my follow-up to the Trouble Ticket that I had opened with Roxio Support, I requested instructions on how to install "Roxio Easy VHS to DVD" without over writing the more recent version of Google Chrome that I had with the older version that was on the DVD.

Does anyone know how to install just “Roxio Easy VHS to DVD” without Google Chrome?

Thanks in advance.

I was hoping that Jim Hardin would respond to this thread and see this is not a Google Toolbar issue.

It is installing Google Chrome the application. I have taken a screen shot of every screen presented during the installation.

The earliest version of "Roxio Easy VHS to DVD" that I had installed was the Windows Vista version.

The CD/DVD Sleeve is labeled TSID # 729824934075 P/N: 150332-00UN EASY VHS TO DVD/UN WM849A2957

Roxio Easy VHS to DVD Installation Disc Obverse (160495-00UN) Reverse (DRSS-664550A1 2)

D:\setup.exe 11/12/2008 2:39 PM 4,619 KB

See attachments EarlyVersionRoxioEasyVHStoDVD-1of2.jpg file listing of "Installation DVD Disc Program & Content" & EarlyVersionRoxioEasyVHStoDVD-2of2.jpg are Message Digest Signatures for the "setup.exe" file.

When I went to install this version it did prompt for installing the Google Toolbar, as did the February 2009 update 02/17/2009 Version 1.1.124; 4.50.13a Build 111B24A, VHS; 450B14A, VHS.

The most recent version of "Roxio Easy VHS to DVD" is for "Windows 7", "Windows Vista", "Windows XP", and it is this version that is the problem child.

The CD/DVD Sleeve labeled TSID # 730049217496 P/N: 150332-04UN EASY VHS TO DVD/UN 840606694

Roxio Easy VHS to DVD Installation Disc Obverse (160495-04UN) Reverse (DRSS-1936920A1 1)

D:\setup.exe 08/20/2010 2:00 AM 3,786 KB

See attachments RecentVersionRoxioEasyVHStoDVD-1of2.jpg file listing of "Installation DVD Disc Program & Content" & RecentVersionRoxioEasyVHStoDVD-2of2.jpg are Message Digest Signatures for the "setup.exe" file.

When I went to install this version it did not prompt for installing the Google Toolbar, it installed Google Chrome the application. If it were just the Google Toolbar, I would not have even bother you folks, I would have just unchecked the Google Toolbar. This is installing “sonic_chrome_v2.exe” (Google Chrome the application) the PATH on the DVD d:\GOOGLE_CHROME\sonic_chrome_v2.exe.

Do any of you folks have experience with this version of “Roxio Easy VHS to DVD” (201B23A ENU)?

The Roxio Technical Support staff has responded, and is going down the trouble shooting flow chart, but they are not answering my very explicit question. Does anyone know how long it takes the support staff to escalate an issue to the developers?

Yes we both have it as well as many other regulars around here...

It DOES NOT install Google Chrome!

However there may be something in the Google Toolbar install that resets Google Chrome back to square one

I'll pass it along but you are the only one who has ever mentioned this in the 16 months that the product has been out! That seems to point back to something else on your PC ;)

Still, I will pass it along!

Sorry I'm not Jim Hardin..

What is your default Browser, Fire Fox or IE?

We have seen both Google Toolbar or Google Chrome offered depending on what browser is default, FF or IE. It was still a check box offered and not a default install as you suggest..

Screen shots of the "Roxio Easy VHS to DVD" installation.

Does anyone see where I went wrong with this?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, it would appear that you wasted a lot of bandwidth by posting way too many screen shots, yet you failed to answer a simple question that cdanteek asked you!

You could have posted the first few screen shots, then the installing Google Chrome screens. There really wasn't a need to post the rest.

Never post your CD Key on a public forum!

Thank you for responding, and for removing the Key. I was just posting the screens as they appeared during the installation. I had considered not posting that screen shot, but I wanted forum members to know a valid Key was being used.

I am still waiting for answers from Roxio support.

I am still wondering why an older version of Google Chrome is being installed when a newer version is already installed on the system?

Why is Google Chrome being chosen as the "Default Browser" when Mozilla Firefox 5.0 was already set to the "Default Browser"?

Does anyone know if the application "Roxio Easy VHS to DVD" even requires Google Chrome to function?

I never saw a box to check or uncheck during the installation for the Google Toolbar or for Google Chrome.

If Google Chrome was already on the system why install it again, especially with an older version?

The "Minimum System Requirements:" on the side of the package only mention the browser "Internet Explorer 7", is Google Chrome even required for "Roxio Easy VHS to DVD"?

Thanks to you and all the other forum members for taking the time to respond.

I will continue to deal with Roxio Technical Support.

I'm just trying to figure out why an older version of Google Chrome was installed while a more current version was already installed and why Google Chrome became the "Default Browser" while Mozilla Firefox was already set as my "Default Browser".

The Roxio Technical Support group responded to my question "Is Google Chrome required for "Roxio VHS to DVD"? Their response was: "I would like to inform you that Google chrome is not required for Easy VHS to DVD."

Both cdanteek as well as myself have requested Roxio to look into this by 2 different paths...

Edit: Frank (Redwagon) also posted about it! ~ sorry Frank, didn't mean to leave you out of the mix

Hopefully they will address it :(

For what it's worth, I just installed this on my XP notebook, and it did install Google Chrome. I did check the "do not install Google toolbar" box. Because of the message on the install screen, I watched for any prompts during the installation, but it completed without further querying about configs or options. I did not "accidentally" tap the keyboard during the process or misread or ignore any prompts because I was not close enough to do so once the installation began. The only reason I knew Chrome had been installed is that I always check for stowaways after installing new products. Chrome has been a frequent and temporary visitor to my herd o' computers in this manner.

I've had no problems with any other Roxio product and look forward to clearing out the mountain of old tapes.

Follow-up to my previous post: I've been using the product on my XP notebook with success and decided to switch to my Vista desktop. When I installed it on under Vista, I did not have an option presented for the Google toolbar OR Chrome, but Chrome surely did install. Not only did it get set as my default browser, the software pref from Windows e-mail to open URLs without a specified page (i.e., www.roxio.com instead of www.roxio.com/index.html) lost their association with the browser.

As a long-time IT pro with a lot of experience writing, testing, and troubleshooting software, as well as training users, I think it is significant that this is a situation easily reproduced and on standard installations. I prefer to install products in a standard manner, avoiding customization, because it saves me headaches when anomalies like this pop up. There is little unusual about either of the computers on which I've seen the "Chrome invasion." Both are current on Windows updates. Both have FireFox as default browser but also have the latest IE versions. Perhaps this is where the Chrome install is able to slither by.

Hi Everybody,

Roxio has identified this as an installer issue, and it will be corrected in shipments moving forward.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

Jon
