Backward Compatibility Issue

lowellgeneral

Question

I searched the archives on this & didn’t have any luck with this question.

I have Creator 11 currently installed on my computer. Previously, I had EMC7.

Videos I produced in EMC7 won’t open with Creator 11, and from what I’ve read herein on the forum the versions are not backward compatible.

So my questions are as follows:

1. If I uninstall Creator 11 and reinstall EMC7 will that solve the problem with the old videos?

2. Are the patches for EMC7 still available…? Can anyone speak to this?

3. If I uninstall Creator 11 and reinstall EMC7, will videos I produced with Creator 11 be affected or corrupted? I plan to migrate them off to an external drive which I won’t access during the process. Is this necessary?

All help appreciated. TY in advance for any assistance you might provide.

I've run different versions together, but I don't recall doing EMC 7 with anything else - I moved to 7.5 and didn't use 7 any more.

The theoreticians don't help here, and the only way is to try it. It would take an hour or two, but I could lumber off and try it for you if you like.

What are the main applications you use in each version? I'll try the main things, since exhaustive tests on everything could take days.

Brendon

I consulted with out IT Dept. & they're going to reinstall the old software. We'll see what happens.

For the benefit of others on the forum I'll post results, but it may take a little while before they're able to get to my needs.

I'm a long-time Roxio user & don't post here often because I usually don't have issues, but I'm surely appreciative of the contributions of those who do participate when I need help. So thanks to all who replied.

If you want to reinstall EMC 7/7.5 and have currently IE7 or higher installed then EMC 7/7.5 will not work. IE7 corrupts EMC 7/7.5. I believe WMP 10 and higher does the same.

Would be reluctant to invite problems to your system...

If it helps (and may save Brendon some install time ;) ), I can tell you that I am running a pc (with XP) that has both EMC 7.5 and Creator 2009 installed. Both work without error for me. The only thing I have to keep straight is which version my project files belong to.

Also, if it helps, I installed Creator 2009 before installing EMC 7.5

OK all you software gurus out there, is Brendon right when he says two software versions can happily co-exist on the same computer? That would (for me) be the ideal solution, but I'm just not versed enough with how software works to know if this is a good idea or not...

And Brendon, thanks, I think we're quickly getting at answers to what I need most. I appreciate your thoughts.

Morning again,

If you do that you should be able to run your EMC 7 projects again as long as the source files are still in exactly the same place as they were when you saved the projects. If you move source files the project will have trouble locaying them.

Answered in post #6. I found them in the page I've linked, and downloaded them this morning.

If project files are stored in a Roxio directory that gets deleted during an uninstall, then those files can be lost. However if they're stored in an independent folder or on a separate drive they won't be lost or corrupted.

I don't think you can run EMC project files in C2011 or vice versa, but I haven't tried it. One thing I have noticed is that Creator versions don't seem to conflict if their version numbers are far enough apart.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if you could have EMC 7 and C2011 happily coexisting on the same system, although you'd have to remember which project files belonged to which program. You might have to turn off file associations for them and load them manually from the appropriate version, instead of just double-clicking a project file and hoping the right Creator would open up.

Does this help?

Hi Brendon, they are indeed project files.

For the benefit of the forum, this is a lesson learned in archiving. Going forward, I will always output to either AVI files or dump back to videotape.

But at the time of rollover, it never occured to me that there would be issues with backward compatibility...

Any thoughts on the questions I originally posed?

Lowellgeneral,

You say "Videos I produced in EMC7 won’t open with Creator 11,". Are these saved project files? Any actual OUTPUT to a video file or DVD by EMC 7 should be a standard file, and shouldn't be version specific.

The lack of backward compatibility usually only shows when you're trying to work with saved projects. The different versions save work in progress differently.

If you want to reinstall EMC 7, the updates are still available HERE, but I don't know how long they'll be available. If you download an update, make sure you archive a copy for later use.

Regards,

Brendon

Hello, I'm sorry, I really don't understand your reply... I'm eyeballing the box and it specifically says Creator 11...?

I'm running XP Service Pack 3.

EMC 7 is compatible only with XP; what do you have on that computer? Please use the full designation Creator 11 should be referred to Creator 2011 to distinguish it from some applications internal numbering system. Thanks.
