Video Compression

gharvey

Question

I am trying to create the highest quality videos possible from mini dv tapes. I captured the video using a firewire and saved them as an .avi file which resulted in a 12 gb file. I am saving them to a 3tb hard drive so space isn't a problem yet. Is there a way I can save the file to a hard drive to reduce the compression that Roxio uses when it formats it to fit onto a dvd. I understand that when I put the file on a dvd it will compress it (fit to 4.7gb), but I'd like the option to watch the movie from a harddrive at the highest quality.

possible. In other words, how to I create a high quality video file which I can play direclty from the hard drive?

Those AVI files are as good as it is going to get

A pretty good alternative would be:

Try it and see for yourself... Pick something that really has details...

I found one years ago where there was a wood panel behind the subjects.

Firewire Captured as mpeg and you could clearly see it was a wood panel...

Firewire Captured as AVI and you could
see the grain
in the panel
:o

So I agree, it does make a difference ;)
