Audio Delay Problem

Bcolo

Question

HI all-

I could use some help. I just purchased the Roxio VHS to DVD for Mac to transfer some old VHS movies I have to DVD before the VHS cassettes completely fall apart. Setup was a breeze and the recording itself goes along just fine. No problems. But when I play the .mov file on my computer after the recording is finished, I run into trouble. About halfway through the recording, the audio starts getting out of sync with the video. It starts off at about a 1-2 second delay, but by the end of the full recording it's all the way at 5 seconds. The delay isn't there when I watch the VHS itself on the TV nor is it there on the display screen while the recording is in progress. This happened to EVERY single VHS transfer I've tried to do in the last few days.

Is there any way to fix this? I'd appreciate it!

Thanks

What is the name Roxio gives the application that is doing the recording? Mine is called "Easy VHS to DVD Capture" but recent purchasers are saying theirs is called "Roxio Video Capture." If it is the latter there are others reporting an audio sync problem. In that case I suggest going to the Roxio Software Updates page and download the latest Easy VHS to DVD Capture application and use that instead.

I only came across this when initially digitising analogue Video8/Hi8 into DV or Digital8/MiniDV, the machine was default to 12 bit, and my software was looking for 16 bit, resulting in a delay.

Once I'd changed to digitising to 16 bit Audio, the problem went away.

What are the Audio Settings for Roxio Video Capture/Easy VHS to DVD Capture?

Luckily I can digitise any analogue video with the JVC SR-VS30, although I did note that my version of VideoGlide which uses a an EasyCAP USB device to encode S-Video/Composite Video & Stereo Audio also had a difficulty with sound delay capture, but the software settings to VideoGlide could be altered to capture in 16 bit, so its possibly a default setting for Quicktime on Macs to look for 16 bit audio?

Easy VHS to DVD Capture seems to solve the Roxio Video Capture audio sync problem, but Easy VHS to DVD is not nearly as featured. It doesn't let you designate the "save to" destination (defaults to the Movies folder) and there are no Trim options. Does anyone have a solution to get audio in sync with Roxio Video Capture? The version of Quicktime I have (10.0) does not seem to allow for Audio Track Extraction.

Try the freeware QT Sync to fix the out of sync version.

OK, I downloaded Easy VHS to DVD v1.0.5 and it worked fine right up until I updated my system to Mac OS 10.7 (Lion), at which point I completely lost all audio capture. Roxio Video Capture works to get both audio and video, but now I'm back to the out-of-sync audio problem with Roxio Video Capture again. I tried deleting Easy VHS to DVD and reinstalling, trashed its preferences, but no luck - still zero audio. Any help would be much appreciated. BTW, I'm trying to send these videos to iMovie.

Are you using the high-quality setting? If so, choose the middle setting instead. It looks every bit as good but doesn't require as much to be written to the hard drive so it's easier for the computer to keep up with the capture.

I'm having the same audio sych problem. I've experimented alot and can't figure out anything that will work. It really makes this Roxio product quite useless. Hopefully they will figure out a solution in an update. I'm using version 2.0.1 with Lion and I'm recording 8mm tapes from a Sharp Viewcam

So for you changing the recording quality to the medium setting doesn't fix the audio sync?

For what it is worth I am having the same problem. Am using version 2.0.1 on a Mac using OS 10.6.8. The MAc has 4gb 1333Mhz DDR3 memory so it must be the software. I am trying to record video from an LG VCR. The sound is out of synch by around 20s after a 45minute recording. There IS an appreciable loss of quality when using the medium quality setting (some of my tapes are pretty poor quality already) so that is not an attractive option. Have tried a couple of suggestions from Roxio Customer support, but no luck so far. Has anyone who has encountered this issue resolved it ?

I had the same problem when recording in High Quality. After changing the quality to medium the audio is fine, although the picture quality suffers a little. What I see different in quality is more horizontal lines in edges of people and objets when the camera moves, not enough to bother with some videos but may hurt videos that already have very low quality. I might try QT sync latter. Has any one had a good experiance with QT sync? or, is it a bit tricky to match audio?

Here is what I did for recording High Quality video.

I used a RCA to S-Video cable connector

This made the audio be a little closer to the video, and the video seems to have a sligthly better quality than a regular RCA connection.

I used QT sync (thanks tsantee!)

It took a while for me to understand but at the end it is a very easy and simple to do.

Finaly my movies are good to go.

In Medium quality

I saw horizontal lines all around people and objects when the camera was moving but not a big deal for some videos I have and sound was good.

Hope this helps some of you.

I see this problem as well. I think I know what the problem is. In every case it happens to me, there has been a break in the recording from one scene to another. In the original VHS video, that break from one scene to another is also one where the recording is slightly garbled as it is transitioning. The software seems to try to "help" by inserting a short green screen break between the scenes. Every point at which the Roxio software inserts this green screen, the audio gets a tiny bit more delayed because it also introduces an audio silence that is a bit longer than the green screen.

If a video doesn't have many of these, the "easy" way of avoiding the problem is to stop recording, then start again with a new recording beginning with the next scene. Since I typically introduce transitions, titles, etc between scenes, this does work. Still, it's a giant pain in the butt that this problem has existed so long.

I was hoping there would be a way to stop the software from "helping out" by inserting the green screens, but I don't see a way to do that.

VHS cameras send an Analog signal which can be out of sync. Do not record strait from the VHS camera if you want to record in High Quality

To fix this you can use a Time Base Correction device which can be expensive. I used an old Home Theater Receiver I have, between the camera and computer and this worked for me.

If you can, try to use a VHS player, Home Theater or something which may fix the signal from the video camera, don't connect the camera straight to the computer if it gives you audio delay in High Quality.

Have none of that, lower the video quality.

Hope this helps.

Hello all,

I have experienced same issues using Roxio Video Capture 2.0.1. I am capturing videos from our analogue Hi8 video camera, using Video Capture device (RCA to USB).

I am using 4 mo old iMac (2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, OS X 10.6.8)

The issues are / were:

- audio / video out of sync once captured movie previewed in Roxio Video Capture or watched in QuickTime

- blurry strip at the bottom of the screen

I've changed one thing that seemed to fix the audio / video out of sync issue - previously used S-Video to connect video (S-Video is recommended for higher quality).

I changed the S-Video connection to Composite (RCA connectors) and the audio / video out of sync was fixed.

The blurry line at the bottom of the screen (video) remains.

Any thought how to get rid of that line ?

Thanks,

Bronco

Hi,

what you're saying sounds like a solution but I expect Roxio's s/w and h/w to work out of the box. Roxio Video Capture product should capture analog video without any out of sync issues.

Thanks,

Bronco

I don't have any audio sync problem when using the Medium quality setting with Roxio Video Capture. This setting captures a high-quality h.264 video whereas the high quality setting captures using the Apple Intermediate Codec. The latter requires a fast hard drive and most Mac's don't have fast hard drives.

You may be able to correct audio sync after capture using QT Sync which is freeware.

Roxio's mistake was including one setting that captures using Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) which creates a huge file that most devices can't even play. Competing USB video-capture devices encode as h.264 mpeg 4, which is what the Roxio device uses in the middle-quality setting. The audio will be in sync when choosing this setting. You can return it and buy something else to record your video as h.264, or you can choose Roxio's medium quality and record your video as h.264. Just pretend the AIC setting isn't an option.

When the Roxio Video Capture app came out I advised Roxio to rename the settings so there was "AIC", "High-quality h.264" and "Medium-quality h.264." Had they done that I think users would have understood they weren't sacrificing quality to capture as h.264. I think it's nuts to capture using AIC in any case.

I recently purchased "Easy VHS to DVD for Mac" version 2.0.1 and experienced a slight delay in the audio -- less than a second, but noticeable enough to be unacceptable. I contacted Corel using my free one-time support contact and they told me to download version 1.0.5 and try it instead. I clicked on the link in their email, downloaded and installed, and it works, i.e., no audio delay. This older software version creates MPG recordings, while the newer one creates MOV. I'm not sure this makes a difference if you're starting with VHS quality anyway. But at least the audio is synchronized.

I'm running Mac OS X version 10.8.5.

tsantee- I just purchased this product from Best Buy and don't plan on returning it. You have been a lot of help, but I didn't read your post until after I had converted several tapes already.

I just converted them and put them on an external hard drive in QT format. I did not play them after converting them to check sound initially.

Today I tried to use iMovie to edit one and discovered the sound issue. That is when I found this thread.

If I download the QT Sync and use it, and it fixes the problem, will it be fixed when I move it to iMovie for editing?

if not, if i understand you correctly, I can just redo the video capture in medium quality instead of high quality and that will fix it right?

This is all new to me, just trying to save some old home movies for my family. Thanks in advance!

My guess is yes. However, I've never used QT Sync with an Apple Intermediate Codec file. Presuming it works okay, choose Save as Reference movie and then import that reference movie to iMovie. If for some reason that doesn't work let me know.

Right. I recommend using this setting for any future captures.

I'm having the same issue with some of my Video8/Hi8 tapes, how do you change the digitizing rate and should I apply it in my case? I am importing using a DCR-TRV350 backwards-compatible Digital8 camcorder, FireWire400 cable, FireWire400-800 adapter, FireWire800-Thunderbolt2 adapter, and iMovie.
