DennisJ
Roxio Creator 2012 is fine for small SlideShows. Try to make 5 chapters and 400 pictures per chapter and myDVD has major problems. In the PREVIEW mode, everything looks Good. But the burned 25 GB BloeRay has 10% picture dropouts. The droupouts are not at the start but later in the BlueRay slide show. The background music is always OK....just the JPG pictures get dropped. Biggest problems: 1. About every 5th picture is NOT shown and the screen goes BLACK but the background music is OK. 2. Use of the "Change Menu Background" works in preview but never in the final burned BlueRay.
DennisJ
Jim: I have made progress on the problems with MyDVD not being able to display large high quality JPG. Your recommendation to try VideoWave was useful and it showed me a more pervasive problem with the ROXIO software. The problems ALSO exist playing a SLIDESHOW with VideoWave too ! And I solved the problem using VideoWave ! ROXIO software > both myDVD AND VideoWave can NOT handle big files that are often > 6500 x 4000 pixels and/or > 6 GByte pictures. Every one of these high quality images will NOT be shown with VideoWave or myDVD. I fixed the problem by decreasing the size of these quality photos to much smaller sizes and then they all show up. Similarly, I often had a beautiful cover picture in myDVD (using Change Menu background) and it always was BLACK. I was able to also correct this problem by again reducing the quality of these images. Yes, I know the 1920 x 1080 is the default HD pixels. But pro camera people shoot with much higher quality. Nobody at ROXIO knows that their ALGIRITHMS OF REDUCTION CAN'T REALLY HANDLE THESE BIGGER PICTURES. And again, each time I reduce wuality on about 35 images, they then will show ip in either VideoWave and myDVD. Bottom LINE: NO, i do not have to wast time on my 5 chapters using VideoWave. I just reduce the quality of all my pictures in myDVD and the problem is resolved. Dennis
Jim_Hardin
All: There is another 'Jim' at Roxio who claims there is absolutely no problem with myDVD and no 'black images' ever should come up. My apologies to Jim Hardin as he has been the only gentleman to try and help. And I thought he was the guy from Roxio. Roxio people are the worst and will not give you the time of day. Regarding the inferior quality of ROXIO software for $100. You are all correct that I should be using my NERO_11 as it has zero problems. NERO handles the typical files generated by good DSLR's from CANON, NIKON and OLYMPUS. Roxio is sooo inferior in this regard. Fortunately I think ThumbsPlus is the best software a professional photographer can own. Regarding using more expensive software, at work I screen 100,000 pictures a year with $35. ThumbsPlus. You can find wonderfully productive software under $100. like UBUNTU 11.0 and Nero_11 and even Microsoft 7 professonal at FRY's. But ROXIO's myDVD and VideoWave is such a disappointment. Dennis Mihora I hate taking the flack for somebody else Otherwise, I cannot fault your conclusion. It is pretty much a give that, No software is Everything to every User... Jim_Hardin
You guys sure protect "your asses". My wrong way is using myDVD for the last 5 years for national SIERRA Club presentations. You guys sure hide the fact that myDVD is unusable for professional photographers. I shoot 20,000 wilderness pix per year and need something that works fast and with reasonable quality photos. Your recommendation to start with VideoWave editor instead of myDVD software is a total 'protect may &%$' game. Both VideoWave and myDVD have the same problem or not handling the quality picture saze and format of most good $1000+ digital cameras. Almost any cheap resizing software will reduce high quality photos to 1920 x 1080 format but NOT correctly by both VideoWave and myDVD. ******************************************* the major flaw in both myDVD and VideoWave was not determined by amybody in ROXIO. it was pointed out by myself to you guys. all you guys do is to 'protect your asses' and not come clean with the ROXIO problem. to not say that we will report the major software problem to Roxio higher management, is a continuation of some strange dishonesty. I was doing it correct - you guys are simply not honest nor forthright with me. ****************************************** As the others have said, this is a user forum, so please mind your manners! To complicate this issue, it can also be caused by a low end Video Card or the lack of one We can try to 'ring the bell' again on this but I am not holding my breath You really do not know the software that well nor do you seem to take the precautions of testing concepts before you go whole hog... The DVD RW is your friend. There is a workflow and life is a lot easier if you follow it You can also batch resize within Roxio under the Photo tab: Select Resize: Pick your Pleasure: and Go! Whether you agree or not, you used the "wrong" program in C2012 to create your slideshow and you painted yourself into a corner. I don't know what major flaw you are talking about. There is a problem with Videowave/myDVD not releasing memory and this eventually causes the "blank" images. This is not solely because of large image files because you can create the same situation using small 1mg image files. It just occurs earlier with large files since they obviously use more memory. The problem has been reported to Roxio long before you "discovered" it

bimicher
As they say... you can lead a horse to water, BUT Pick ANY Title - Choose Edit Movie: Note Return button: Note changes in File Menu - No dmsm option Best of luck to you If you use "Add Slideshow" to create the slidehow project then "Edit Movie" does not take you to the myDVD Videowave editor but back to the "Add Slideshow" editor. So Dennis is correct in his statement but only because he started his project the "wrong" way.

bimicher
Jim: Thanks. But I have to correct something you recommended as your recommendation can NOT work ...on my machine. Don't tell people to try 'salvage' massive myDVD projects by selecting One Title and then Edit It. You claim software will drop one to the VideoWave Editor........It will not NOT. When the project is started using myDVD, the Edit It always drops back to myDVD Slideshow Assistant. It will NOT go to VideoWave. When starting wiht a massive myDVD, one is FORCED to stay in myDVD. I guess you start in VideoWave and then goto myDVD. What you told me to do is bogus......Am I correct.....You try it. Am I happy with ROXIO software because of 'all the shortcomings' Absolutely NOT. I am hoping for a fix in version 13. Dennis/photographer Jim is correct and so are you. Jims recommendation is not bogus and does work if you had started your project correctly even when using myDVD If you had started with the Videowave Editor in myDVD to create the 5 Title slideshows then you could have done easily what Jim recommended. Unfortunately you used the Slideshow Assistant (a very limited, simplified program) to create the slideshows and it will always drop to the Slideshow Assistant for editing. I doubt very much that there will be a fix for this since it is not really a "bug". BTW, I could reproduce the "blank images" problem using image files then 2 mb in size so the image size is not the problem as such.

Jim_Hardin
Thanks for the Track Info cd! (I'm still trying to understand it ) Dennis you can still 'salvage' your MyDVD project as Roxio suggested... In MyDVD select One Title and Edit it... That will drop you to MyDVD's VideoWave Editor. Do the Export As from there to create a Movie Clip. ~ I usually pick something like AVCHD or BD Best Quality, whatever closely matches my final target output... Do this with a couple of the Titles Known to cause problems! Then start a new MyDVD Project and add those two files and burn an RE disc and try it out. I am curious if it will get around this problem by using those steps Also SHUTDOWN your PC and restart it between the Export & New Project (for those times when a Restart just isn't enough )
bimicher
Hi Jim: For many years I have used myDVD the software for mountain adventure slide shows. I also use < NERO Vision > and especially << Ulead VideoStudio >>. My usual burning medium is Verbatim LTH or TDK. The burner is on the SATA line and is a LG brand HL-DT-ST BD-RE. Per Roxio's request, I have run their recommended debugging software to check my hardware called DxDiag and it shows the system is all OK. ROXIO has not responded in any way after I sent the DxDiaG FILE. Since I have used myDvd for DVD's I continue that path. No, I do not use VideoWave. ROXIO gave me information that is bad. They told me to take this package and move it to VideoWave. Roxio said to " 1. Open the file in Roxio VideoWave. Then click on Output and click on Export as. Select another format and convert the file. Then burn file using Roxio MyDVD." BUT that recommendation can NOT be done as the myDVD slide show is a format called file.DMSD But DMSD can not be read by VideoWave. wHEN i QUESTIONED THEM ON THIS, THEY GAVE NO ANSWER OR FOLLOWUP RECOMMENDATION.....frustrating. I guess I could start all over with ROXIO. One possible way is to use ULEAD VideoStudio to make each of these 5 chapters and save the 1080p in a MP4. Then bring in each MP4 and TOTALLY ignore the myDVD slideshow creation method. I like myDVD for DVDs but for BlueRay, I have only been successful with 5 GB files which is no more storage than using a DVD. I guess my experience is that MyDVD has an internal software problem of counting when there are many many JPG ? Roxio gave you the correct information... if you had started the slideshow in Videowave (which is the best way actually and recommended by "expert" users here). Using VW you can create each slideshow as a separate project and either Export to a video file or just save the project as a VW project file (it has the extension dmsm). In myDVD you then simply add the video file or the dmsm file and it will automatically create the Title item on your menu. Creating all of your slideshow project in myDVD is a very poor way of doing it (unless very simple projects). It is much easier and safer to make changes in the VW projects then do changes in the whole myDVD project.. dmsd is not a format but simply the extension used when the myDVD project is saved: this file contains nod vide, etc but simply the list of resources used in your project and the instructions on how to create the slideshow. I don't understand what you mean by this statement: "I have only been successful with 5 GB files which is no more storage than using a DVD" How long in time is your whole slideshow project? Have you encoded the same project in Nero or Ulead?
DennisJ
How do you get 12X out of Verbatim LTH media? I don't know what the maximum is actually achieving with ROXIO because I have been using only 2X (lowest possible speed with ROXIO). The Verbatim is 6X type that I purchased for ROXIO. I can talk a lot more about NERO and Ulead VBideoStudio when I use 12X. Incidentally, it takes 22 hours to compile the complete package and roughly half hour to burn using ROXIO myDVD. So running at SLOWEST burn speed doesn't matter. Why ROXIO takes 22 hours to compile is amazingly slow. So don't waste your precious time worrying about 2X or 12 X when you have to wait 22 hours with preparation before burn. UGHHHHHHHHHHHH !!! cdanteek
DL media is is a little different with -R being really wild in that alternately to both layers some inside out the other outside in Opposite Track Path (OTP) is a term used in optical technology, allowing fast switching from layer 0 to layer 1. A dual-layer DVD or Blu-ray disc with Opposite Track Path means that layer 0 is written in a spiral track starting at the inside of the disc, whereas the layer 1 spiral starts at the outside of the disc. Both tracks are written so that the DVD player will rotate the disc in the same direction. When reading the disc sequentially (as is done during DVD video playback), OTP enables the player to switch from layer 0 to layer 1 without a seek across the entire disc. With the DVD technology, a small gap is left in the layer 1 track every time it crosses the layer 0 track (twice per revolution). As a result, the data capacity of layer 1 is less than layer 0 which means that a dual layer disc only has a capacity of 8.5 GB instead of the 9.4 GB that might have been expected. In the case of Blu-ray discs, it was realised that the gap was unnecessary as the laser is perfectly capable of focussing through track 0. Consequently, dual layer Blue-ray discs have double the capacity of their single layer counterparts(50 GB as against 25 GB). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opposite_Track_Path

Regular CD & DVD's burn/read from the Center Out... Question
DennisJ
Try to make 5 chapters and 400 pictures per chapter and myDVD has major problems.
In the PREVIEW mode, everything looks Good.
But the burned 25 GB BloeRay has 10% picture dropouts.
The droupouts are not at the start but later in the BlueRay slide show.
The background music is always OK....just the JPG pictures get dropped.
Biggest problems:
1. About every 5th picture is NOT shown and the screen goes BLACK but the background music is OK.
2. Use of the "Change Menu Background" works in preview but never in the final burned BlueRay.
