joca
I have a movie clip of a transparent lightning effect I created in After Effects. Is there any way I can overlay this on another ptoject clip in video wave.

joca
Hi joca, I think you are quite sharp Regarding effects and transitions, as you said transitions go between your clips. I'm sure you found all the ones in VW (Show Effect Selector > Transitions {first button}). You may be able to use hardware render with your computer, and that would allow use of the 3D transitions, if you haven't already been able to access them. Also, although there are extra Effects you can buy, as previously discussed, there are many to choose from already installed (Show Effect Selector > Video Effects {Second Button}). If you have an Effect that you have made in another project and output to an acceptable video format, you can overlay it onto any of your Main Track clips using an Overlay track (instead of one of the Fx tracks). I'd like to know more about your home transitions and how you make them. Sorry I can't help with the non responding trouble, but if you create a new post in the appropriate forum, one of the guys should be able to work though that with you. Hi karri First of all thanks for your input and advice.I will seek out the stuff you talking about. The not responding issue is one that I have read about and experienced and still come up against fairly often but I guess there is no definitive answer available so I just learnt to save often and live with it I accept it could be of my own making but I have enough pc that should be able to deal with any lag problems. Perhaps I am just click happy. I will post on the audio drop out though. OK home transitions (for want of a better word) is no great mystery, I create them in After Effects just quite simple clips of particle light flashes/lightning effects or anything that is suitable to move between two clips you can fade them in or out or both make very short clips. If they are made using Alpha channel then they are also handy as transparent overlays to be able to move out of one clip and into another. The ability to use as overlay came directly from your advice to me and I am now using them in my current video.. I am no great master of AE in fact I am very basic indeed it is a very complex programme of which I hardly know enough to touch the edges but, I know enough to create some simple bits to be different enough and appropiate for the video that I am editing. Unfortunately I don't make enough videos to push me into gaining more experience. As I previously said I use roxio because I am getting used to it's functions (slowly) so like most things you are inclined to stick with what you can already handle. I know there are things like Premier if you can afford it but even if I could that's another load of brain power to deal with, I will say this from my point of view AE is a great programme and it compliments roxio VW and just another tool to use. Now my email notification has topped working Oh! well something else to deal with lol!
bimicher
Karri thank you again for your advice. I suppose the easiest way for home transitions is just fit it in between project clips which one can always split if needed. Yes I thought about 2012 but I had so much hassle getting this 2011 installed that I decided to give it a miss but, I might well be tempted with 2013. It is just that I am now getting used to roxio that to change up another programme like premier or final edit ( I also have a mac) it's another learning task and at 72 the old matter isn't quite so fast these days. You will see from my profile I have some not too bad kit but I still get issues with not responding and lately the audio drops out for no apparent reason. Hopefully as the product designers get more miles behind them some of these niggles can be ironed out although I'm not saying it's not me that the problem might well lay with. Like Karri, I am curious to know what you mean by "home transitions"? How did you make them?

joca
Hi Joca, thanks ... Unfortunately, I don't know of any way to use home made transitions in VW. I don't think you can add clips to the Fx tracks, however VW comes with a bunch of effects (Show Effects> click and drag effect to Fx track under the clip you want the effect applied to) and for versions previous to Creator 2012, you can add more effects including Enhance and Style and Nature. (They are included with Creator 2012.) Many of the effects are keyframeable and you can get some good effects. Karri thank you again for your advice. karri
Karri you have been fantastic with your answers and the way you describe them, you obviously have a great knowledge of the workings of VW can I ask you two more questions that concern editing in VW 1. joca
Yes, split the clip where you want the slow motion effect to begin and again at where you want the slow motion to end. Then double click on the new section between your splits and the Trim window will open. In the Trim window, next to Speed, type in a lesser number or click on the minus sign to incrementally lower the value. Click OK. If you aren't happy with the speed, just double click on the clip again and try a different Speed value. (Higher numbers increase the Speed.) karri you're a star thank you I will try it

joca
After you add the clip as an overlay (Add Photo/Video > Insert as Overlay), highlight it and the clip's Settings will be active. The Setting panel for the overlay has 3 tabs -- Main, Position, and Motion. In the Main tab, the default showing should be Shaped masks. Click the drop down arrow and select Chroma Key. In the Chroma key dialog, click on the Primary color eyedropper and then on the color you want to key out (in this case, the alpha channel should show up as black so click on the black in your overlay. Doing so should reveal your Main track video underneath. If there are lighter shades of black (gray) use the Secondary and Tertiary color eyedroppers to key those out as well. Adjust the Brightness, Tolerance and Hue sliders to fine tune the appearance of the lightening strike. Let us know if you run into difficulty. thank you very much you have been very helpful. I will have a go later. I could have done it all in AE but the project file would be so big it would have been a nightmare to render. I could have split the file and gone down that road but a lot of messing and hassle
joca
What format is the video? Please explain transparent; if it is transparent, how would one see it? Is it partially transparent? Is the background one color? Have you considered a green screen effect? Oops I just saw that karri was posting. Listen to her she is the expert ! The video clip format has been rendered into quicktime movie but it does not really matter because it can go into any of the windows or mac file extensions. It is the background that is transparent and there is an alpha channel so only the subject matter is seen and becomes part of the projrct clip. Karri has answered my question perfectly. bimicher
Thank you for your reply. How do I import/add an overlay to a clip in the project in VW or even get it into roxio If the overlay is in a standard video format (such as avi,wmv or mpg), just add it on the overlay track. If it is an overlay plug-in then I don't think it can be used. I think you should still answer sknis questions to give us some more information. joca
You should be able to add the clip as an overlay. VW may not recognize the alpha channel, but you can key out using either the luma or chroma key feature. (Waves to Steve!) Thank you for your reply.
