Hd Dvd Successfully Burnt But Does Not Playback On Dvd Player Or Imac

Pras

Question

I have a mpg file (a slide show), which I would like to burn onto a DVD so that I can use it on a DVD Player.

The mpg file I have is:

Video: MPEG-2, 1920x1080, 59.94fps

Audio: MPEG-1, Stero, 48000 Hz

I just purchased Roxio Pro and have installed the HD/Blue Ray Plug-in along with the latest firmware updates.

My intention of purcahsing Roxio Pro was to create a High Definition DVD Video disc.

So far I've created two copies with one MPEG 4 AVC and another MPEG-2 video format. Both were copied successfully.

I then placed the DVD into my DVD player and the DVD player read cannot read DVD. (the dvd player is quite old)

So then I placed the DVD into my iMac and used Roxio Video Player, where the picture was all pixelated (very high pixels, that you can't see the picture at all).

Can you please help and shed some light in what I'm doing wrong? Please let me know if you need any more info.

Thank you very much and I hope to hear from someone really soon.

Kind regards,

Pras

There are a couple of issues here. One is that you are attempting to play a HD video disc on a SD video DVD player. That never will work. The second issue may be that your source is a slide show. What happens if you play the original mpg file with Roxio Video Player?

Hi Tsantee,

Thank you for your reply.

1st issue: understand that my DVD player cannot probably play HD video. Suspected that.

2nd issue: My source is a slide show which is a mpg. Just tried playing it on Roxio Video Player and works perfectly.

What I realised was, that upon pressing preview (before burning) the video was already pixelated. Please see attached screen shot of my slide-show video.

Your suggestions in resolving would really be appreciated.

Thank you once again.

I don't know why that is happening. Something to test is if Toast can convert the .mpg video to h.264 using the Apple TV preset. Add the .mpg video to the Convert window and click the Convert button. Choose Apple TV as the setting. I believe you'll have the option to see a preview. Does it look presentable? If not, there's something about the mpeg encoding of that video that is not acceptable to Toast and the only option is to find some other application that can convert it.

Hi Tsantee,

thank your for your feedback.

I just tried to do Apple TV preset and unfortunately same result. Very pixelated.

What I also noticed was, if the preview slide show was set to start in the middle......i would get an error message saying: "Couldn't complete the last command because of a MAc OS error. Result Code = -50"

However, If I set it to start preview at start, then the video would start perfectly and then a second or two into the video, it would get highly pixelated.

If you think the problem may exist in the video....what do you think I should do to convert it into a DVD?

Would you be able to suggest another program which I can convert into DVD in High Res?

really appreciate your time and your help.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Who created the .mpg file and how was it created? Your best bet is to go to who created the video and ask for a DVD version. My reason for asking how it was created is there are two kinds of slide shows. One is officially called a slide show in which each picture is a chapter in the video. You basically watch one still photo after another. The other kind is a movie made from photos. This is the kind that has pans and zooms and other effects to create motion within each photo. The first is a format that can't be converted and the second is a format that can. Your description has me thinking this is the slide show rather than movie format.

Then comes the question of how important is it to you to have it on disc? You say you can watch it on your computer using Roxio Video Player. There are devices that can play .mpg videos on a TV such as the WD TV. If you have a HDTV it might play it if you copied it to a flash drive that is inserted into the HDTV's USB port. It may be that your TV doesn't decode .mpg video however. My Sony Blu-ray player does and it can stream it straight from my Mac. So there are options to discs that may or may not work with that video file.

Hi tsantee,

Thank you once again for your feedback.

The slide show movie was created on a program called Pro-show Producer. I am the one who made it using a PC computer since Pro-show producer doesn't support mac.

It is the kind of slide show which pans, zooms etc. So it is definitely a movie format slide show.

It is really important to have it on a disc because the slide show I've created is not for me but for a client. So it'll really be helpful if you could suggest a program that could help convert my mpg video into a dvd.

I hope you understand.

thank you and hope to hear back from you soon.

It's very strange that this isn't working with Toast and I don't know what else to try that I'm confident will work. Can you go back to the PC source and export to a format other than mpg? It is ideal to save it as h.264 but MPEG 4 is good, too. What export settings does that application have? Maybe I could suggest one to you.

Hi Tsantee,

Unfortunately I cannot go back to PC source as it is no longer with me. I also thought about that but it wasn't an option for me.

Can you suggest another program which could output to dvd in HD quality?

I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you once again.

Sorry, I don't have a recommendation. You can do a search at MacUpdate.com or check if there are any recommendations in the Mac forum at videohelp.com. I'm concerned that it is an issue with your QuickTime library not having the correct codec for this video (except for playback). It might work to get Apple's QuickTime MPEG 2 Playback Component and use MPEG Streamclip to create a Toast-usable file, but I'd hate for you to spend $20 and find that it doesn't help.

Hi Tsantee,

Thank you once again for your suggestions.

Can you please explain a little more on what this Apple quicktime Mpeg 2 playback component is all about?

I'm happy to purcahse it as I am in a very desperate situtation.

I also must let you know that my iMac was only purchased 1 month ago. I have the 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7

One of the first programs to purchase and install was Toast Pro, purely because I had this job to do. I did an extensive research on Toast and thought i should purchase the Pro edition which would solve my issue.

Unfortunaltey to date, I am yet to get the mpeg into a dvd.

I'd really apprecaite your assitance in this.

Thank you once again.

You can find Apple's QuickTime MPEG 2 Component here.. It places what is called a codec in a QuickTime Library on your Mac. Toast oftentimes uses the QuickTime codecs when it is decoding a video. For some reason Apple doesn't automatically include a codec for MPEG 2 video and choose to sell it as an add-on. However, Toast doesn't use this codec as it has its own MPEG 2 decoder built in. So I don't think it will help without the aid of MPEG Streamclip. MPEG Streamclip is freeware you can get here. It is a very useful application that requires the QuickTime MPEG 2 codec. What I suggest is opening your slideshow with MPEG Streamclip and then choosing Convert to MPEG from its file menu. Then use that in Toast. If that doesn't work try choosing Export to MPEG-4 (but move the quality slider up a bit).
