Select Video Device Failed

williams63

Question

My Roxio Game Capture had been working fine until recently, as I received the error 'Select video device failed'. I have tried to use VirtualDub but it still does not work.

I have uninstalled and re-installed the software. Whenever I do open up the software the color scheme changes to Windows 7 basic and the error message pops up.

Anybody know how to fix this problem?

Troubleshoot Problems with Aero

A Click Start and type “Find and fix problems with transparency and other visual effects” then click, Find and fix problems with transparency and other visual effects

B In the new window click Advanced to fix any problems automatically.

C If the problem is not fixed you will see a list of possible issues.

I have done that and it says "Desktop Window Manager is disabled".

Looking at previous topics I have also looked at the device manager and two 'Roxio GAMECAP' are present.

I am not sure if the Roxio device is faulty, or maybe it's a problem with my laptop (which does meet the requirements).

EDIT: The Roxio device is NOT faulty. I tried it on an older laptop (which is not powerful enough to record) but it shows that it did work.

So I am guessing it is something to do with my laptop.

1. Click the (Start) in the bottom left-hand corner of your screen.

2. Type in: "Services.msc" (without the quotes) into the Start Search textbox, Click, Services.msc.

3. Scroll down until you locate the entry that is labeled: “Desktop Window Manager Session Manager”

4. Right-click on this service. Select Start from the context menu.

5. Right click once again on the entry. Select Properties from the context menu.

6. Go to the “General tab.” Change the Start up Type to Startup Type Automatic....

Thank you for your reply.

But, this doesn't fix the recording issue. All cables are correctly plugged in, when the USB is connected two 'Roxio GAMECAP' is shown in the device manager. However when I open up RGC software it says 'Select Video Device Failed' and when I click 'OK' the no signal changes from green to red and just a black preview screen. My other laptop does detect a signal but that does not meet the system requirements so I cannot use it.

I have used it before on this laptop, and I haven't changed any of the cables. And I know the cables are correct because I have just tested it on an older laptop and a signal is detected however the laptop doesn't meet the system requirements so it doesn't record properly (lag, freezing etc.).

Here are my current computer specs, if it helps:

Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1

Processor: Intel® Core i5-2450M CPU @ 2.50GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.5GHz

Memory: 4096MB RAM

DirectX Version: DirectX 11

That would make me think the Roxio USB Game Capture Device is good and the problem is with the one PC!

I kind of misplaced the documentation at the moment. I noticed that with just the Roxio hardware connected with the USB only that I still get this message "selected video device failed" and the signal doesn't go green.

I have everything UP-TO-DATE (OS, Video Card, Roxio Driver, etc)

I really hope that there is really a small issue.

I am going to try installing the program to another computer (laptop) to see what happens. Currently I have my PC and game console connected to the same TV. I switch channels by source. I know now that its not because of that because like I said,

I have tried starting up the program with nothing connecting to it and I still get the same error message.
