Hard Drive Space Disappearing On Me

Hello,

 

Sorry I'm not sure what version I have, I will update as soon as I figure out what it is. I recently purchased this program (July 2012), if that helps.

 

Are videos saved anywhere besides the Roxio home movies folder? I was planning on placing a VHS movie onto my computer, then burning that movie to DVD, then deleting the movie off my computer. However, after only a few movies, I've run out of hard drive space. I had around 15 gigs of hard drive space left before I started converting VHS movies, and now I only have 5. I have deleted all the movies i have converted from VHS off my hard drive. So where did the rest of my hard drive space go?

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, you should have Roxio Video Capture as your application. Don't switch to the one that's on the software updates page.

 

Second, choose Medium Quality because that captures in an excellent h.264 format that will look every bit as good as the high quality setting, take up much less hard drive space and not have problems with audio sync.

 

If the video was transferred to iTunes after capture then you probably have two copies. One was saved by the Roxio capture app and the other is a duplicate that iTunes puts in its iTunes library.

 

When Toast makes a video DVD it needs to write temporary MPEG 2 files in the Roxio Converted Items folder (which is in the Documents folder by default). Toast's default also empties that folder when Toast quits. Check if that folder is empty.

 

I don't know where else you may have the videos.

I have this set so movies save to my desktop. Ive noticed when there is an error when recording a movie and I have to start over, whatever portion of the movie was recorded is not saved to my desktop, but I also dont get the hard drive space back. Any idea where its going? I've tried searching Itunes, Roxio folders, Imovie, and performing general searches to no avail.

Have you tried restarting the Mac to see if the hard drive space remaining clears up?

Yes I have. Started out this process with 15 gigs free, now im down to a meager 5.88.

I've shared all that I know. In the Finder select Find (command+F) and in the window that appears click on the button that reads "kind" and scroll down to select "File size". There you can set up some criteria for the minimum size files you want to appear. You can click the + sign to add other criteria such as Created. Hopefully that will help you find what's taking up the space. There also is a criteria for File visibility.

I've got the exact same problem with "Hard Drive Space Remaining" getting smaller. I'm running version 2.0.1 on OS 10.7.4. I was running a recording and it crashed after about an hour (computer was probably going to sleep. I'll have to change that). I started with about 76 gig available and now it says about 70. There is no file in the "Movie" folder. I can't find any sort of temp files. "Get Info" on my hard drive actually shows about 76 gig. I've tried deleting preference files from the library and reinstalling the app. Still getting a lower hard drive space remaining than what I started with.

I don't know. This is when I run Disk Warrior because it corrects the directory. If you don't have it see if running Disk First Aid in Disk Utility will fix this.

Losing disk space at about 5 Gig a day and I can't find the files to delete. Can anyone explain this?

Same here, I can't explain it either, I did find 2 folders in "My videos/Easy VHS to DVD/". A captured video folder and a computer folder that had the same movie in both. When I tried to delete the captured video folder version, it keeps asking for an administrator, I don't have those kinds of accounts on my computer, I'm the only user. I just can't delete it. Any ideas?

The administrator is you. Your account password should work.

I, too, am missing a significant amount of drive space.

 

I will attempt a transfer. Sometimes, the transfer is successful and I can navigate to my Movies folder and find the movie I just transferred, and all is well. When this happens, I notice that my hard drive has less space available (which is to be expected after digitizing a video).

 

HOWEVER... (and here is where it gets goofy)... At other times, the transfer will fail with an "error -46" and I will have to try again. YET, after the failed transfer, my hard drive still shows that a significant amount of space is missing. And a file that large cannot be found anywhere. This makes no sense.

 

It seems as though Roxio Video Capture is creating an invisible file after a failed transfer. How big is this invisible file? Well, however big the movie file WOULD be during a successful transfer.

 

So, my question is: "Where the heck are these invisible files that Roxio Video Capture is creating during a failed transfer?" My hard drive is 15-20 GB less than it should be, and I don't have any movie files to show for it.

 

(And yes, I did navigate to my Movies folder where Roxio USUALLY puts the successful movies.)

 

Any one find a solution to this problem?

Roxio creates temporary hidden movie files during capture. I assume after a succesful capture, it deletes these or unhides them. However if a capture fails these files remain hidden in the Movies folder taking up a large amount of space. In order to see these files to delete them, you need to open up Terminal in OS X utilities and modify the user defaults file by entering this:

 

defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE

*If you're running 10.9 you'll need to use a lowercase "f" in Finder.

 

and then restart Finder:

killall Finder

 

Navigate to your Movies folder and delete any hidden file that has the .mov file extension.

 

To revert back to hidden files enter:

defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE

Then:

killall Finder
