Thanks; connected the drive directly on the imac but get the same error message

That's strange. I wonder if it will help to use a different USB cable. Try burning something using Disk Utility to see if the problem is solely with Toast. Also, try choosing Save as Disc Image in Toast and then burn the resulting .toast file to disc using the Image File setting in the Copy window. I'd suggest trying different disc media but you say it won't burn CDs or DVDs. You might check if a firmware update is available for the drive. If possible, try the drive using a different Mac as a test.
