Why Doesn't Extracted Audio From An Edited Clip Keep The Edit?

I'm trying to do some cutaway sequences - which I understand can be tricky in Roxio. The problem I'm having is when I edit the video clip I want to use, then extract the audio and then re-add that audio as a separate clip (on the SFX or music channel) it doesn't keep the edit, it's back to the original audio of the clip. This means I can't just lay that audio under the main bit of footage, cut away to some other video footage while continuing the audio track and then cut back to the original with the audio still in sync.

Do you mute the "native audio" after you have added the extracted clip to one of the other audio tracks?

 

What do you mean it "doesn't keep the edit"?

 

Is the final video exactly the same time length as the initial video?

If you are extracting the audio from the video object in Videowave, no, it does not follow the editing you do on the video. Extracted audio will still be the audio of the original video object. Do your editing of that extracted audio in Sound Editor and that's the one you use.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I mute the native audio of both the main clip and the clip that's cut into it and use the main clip's extracted audio. The problem is that this extracted audio hasn't kept the edit (top and tailing etc) that I've done on the video clip it's been extracted from, it's extracted the audio track for that whole video clip, before any editing had been done.

It may be tough to sync. Give it a try by noting the time in and out of the video clip that you want to extract to determine the same time in and out in the audio that you want to edit.

 

Another solution, but laborious, is for you to create a video file that runs over the entire audio you want to capture. So add the video clip in Videowave. Make your edit. Then select Tools|Export As (I am not in front of a PC with Creator software so please look for it) to create a video file of the edited original file. Then you extract the audio from that newly created (temporary) video file. You keep doing this for the sections where you want to extract audio.

 

Hopefully, someone else has a neater approach.

It's weird how Roxio doesn't have a function for a hugely popular video editing technique - are they trying to make people upgrade to Pinnacle...

I'm not convinced that I know exactly what you are doing. Why don't you keep the original video and audio and do an overlay to block out the parts of the video that you don't want. That overlay could be another video or an image. It can cover all or part of the original video -sort of a picture in picture effect or just switch to another video display altogether?

 

Do you want all the audio or not?

Like Steve, not really clear what you want. Often when someone "wants" a new feature, it is due to their lack of understanding how to use what is already there.

I just provided you the way to extract the desired section of the audio.

 

I agree though with sknis and myguggi for you to provide more info as to what exactly are you trying to do? You may not need the steps I provided you. Sounds like you're doing a "PIP" (picture-in-picture), as I think already indicated by sknis above.

Thanks for all the replies and sorry for the delay (my son came home, so it's fairly manic until he's gone down). I think the overlay answers cracked it - there seems to be two ways of overlaying - either a theme or a video/still. I wasn't aware you could do the latter, so I thought overlay was for onscreen graphics / effects (like a filter etc) not for adding videos on top of one another. Now I've found that (thanks to you guys!), I can split the video where I want the cutaway/overlay to take place and overlay the video I want then split again at the end of the overlay and return to the original - all the while, keeping the original clip's audio running.

 

Apologies for not answering everyone's questions directly. I'm struggling to use the right terms for everything I'm doing and the jargon is what's stopped me here. Thanks again.

Each has its' own advantages as well as disadvantages.

 

Yes you have to learn the language as you go, Roxio is not yet offered by Rosetta Stone
