How Long Does It Take To Encode A Movie?

Question

I'm trying to burn a full length movie to DVD and each time it takes 6-8 HOURS to "encode". This is the first time I've burned anything since switching to mountain lion but I just don't remember it taking this long before. How long does it usually take to burn a video DVD? I'm trying to figure out if this is normal or if there is possible a problem with my burner. Thanks!

Encoding time doesn't have anything to do with your Mac's burner. What format is the source video? If it is a HD video (more than 720x480) then the issue is Toast's encoder having to rescale it to SD (standard definition). If it already is a SD video then the encoding probably should be less than twice the length of the video presuming you have a reasonably fast Mac and more than the minimum amount of RAM.
