Dvd Chapters Shift

Aybert

Question

Hi there. I built a DVD from a big MTS file, which I split into parts in order to get mutlple DVD chapters and titles in the menu. But when I burn the disc the chapters are shifted. E.G. I wanted to extract from time 10:38 to time 15:38, and what I get on the DVD is from 10:45 to 15:45. Any idea ?

Others have mentioned this in the Toast 11 Pro Forum and I too painstakingly created chapters in a two hour video at the point where commercials were removed and the program begins again (in black). Time difference increased from about 8-10 seconds to two minutes or more. Would the "automatic" setting "sense" the breaks and add chapters or is it still "crapshoot?"

NOTE: I tried to submit this in a "Bug Report" but the page hung -- so I don't know if tech support saw this or not.

So if a TS Supervisor sees this, please address this problem as soon as possible.

Also the editing process is extremely slow -- the cursor action on the playhead needs to increase so you can scrub with audio and not have to drag the playhead.

I don't know the format of your source video so I'm not sure if automatic will match the edit points. If the video has chapter markers placed in iMovie then automatic recognizes them. If an MPEG 2 video has been trimmed using MPEG Streamclip or EyeTV's editor then the breaks at the edit points are automatic chapters. Since Toast's editor only marks places that Toast is to leave out of the encoding I doubt if those are automatic chapter points. You should see the chapters displayed in the chapter marking window when automatic is selected. If there are none then Toast adds them in time intervals unless manually selected.

I don't know about the slippage of the manual edit points. This also probably is different depending on the format of the source video. I would expect some slippage when using MPEG 2 video because the markers can only be at key frames rather than reference frames. But I wouldn't expect it to be more than a couple seconds.

Toast's editor has problems. It is a mess with HD MPEG 2 video. Maybe it isn't working right with SD MPEG 2, either. It should be okay with h.264 and QuickTime movie files.

It's unlikely that Roxio Technical Support will see anything posted in the forums.
