Sync Audio And Video

awjligonier

Question

After loading out some VHS tapes of Drum & Bugle Corps, and when doing some editing in IMovie, such as eliminating parts and adding transitions.....when I burn to DVD and play back, the video and audio are off......example watching a drummer drum....video side has stopped and audo is about 2 second behind......any fixes for suggestions for this problem......Thanks for any help in advance...WJ

There's a freeware app called QT Sync that may be able to fix that for you. I recommend capturing using the medium quality setting because that uses the h.264 MPEG 4 codec rather than capturing using the high quality setting which uses the Apple Intermediate Codec. Many users find the medium quality setting fixes the audio sync issue and looks just as good. I'm presuming you have the Roxio Video Capture app.

I too am having a problem with the audio lagging behind video after I down load a VHS clip. I am running an iMac with OS 10.7.5 on a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. I uploaded an update that support linked me to. It now says I'm running 2.0.1 version of Roxio Video Capture. The problem still existed after the update. The QT Sync would not load because the computer will no longer support power pc apps. I will try the medium quality to see if that helps. I am glad that these forums exist because it is hard to get much help through their company support.

I doubt if Roxio has acknowledged the audio sync issue when using the high quality setting. QT Sync 0.3.3 is a universal app so it should work for you although capturing a medium quality is probably the best solution.

I also have the problem of sound not sync'ed. why doesn't ROXIO do something about it? DO other conversion APPS have the same issue?

The problem seems to be that Roxio (unlike anyone else) is supporting capture using the Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) when using the Best quality setting. This requires high-speed writing to the hard drive which most Mac drives can't accomplish. In trying to keep up the audio falls out of sync. This is a low-tech explanation of something that is probably much more high-tech and I could be mistaken. In any event, we know that capturing as h.264 instead of AIC (which is how it's done with the medium-quality setting) fixes the audio sync problem and writes a MUCH smaller file.

If I had a Mac Pro with a 10,000 rpm hard drive I could test to see if using Best quality retains the audio sync.

My gripe with Roxio on this issue is how they termed their quality settings. They should have labeled them "AIC", "Best MPEG-4" and "Medium MPEG-4" because that's what they are. Other capture devices (I have a couple other brands) only do h.264 MPEG-4 captures.
